Being overpaid by employer

Yourcoffeeormine · 02/09/2018 10:38

I appear to have been over paid by a few hundred pounds this month

We changed pay systems at work and they've paid me the right wage, but for the wrong hours so I've had a minimum wage increase I assume because it looks like I haven't got minimum wage because they've put I've done more hours than I have

I can't speak to anyone til Monday but I was just wondering once they rectify it, how will they expect me to pay it back, will they take it out of my next wage or let me give them it back this month?

Also if anyone knows with it being a national minimum wage top up, will it actually be my employer that's over paid me or will it have come from the government?

Thanks

I got paid at the wrong rate one month. The following month they paid me what I should have been paid then deducted what I had already been paid. Bloody confusing system.

This happened to me once. They called me in to a meeting and asked me to repay the overpayment within about 6 weeks or something like that. I guess all employers will be different though.

This has happened to me twice. I just repaid it straight back the following day once my employer had given me the account details to pay it back.

Just don’t spend it, move it to another account.

You will definitely need to pay it back, so it makes sense to just keep it. You will be able to negotiate paying it back in smaller amounts but that will be a pain.

If it is correct then it’s a great surprise!

^This. Why would you spend the extra anyway?

Yourcoffeeormine · 02/09/2018 11:39

Thanks for the replies!

Of course I'm not going to spend it! I'm not sure where In my OP it was even suggested I was going to do that!

I'm simply wondering what will happen

I got overpaid by 2k over a few months. I queried it and was told it was right. I knew it was not. Eventually payroll got in touch!

They deducted it from my pay over a few months. Sad times.

ClaudiaWankleman · 02/09/2018 11:55

If you receive any benefits, credits etc that are calculated based on a monthly income then I would suggest you make payroll correct their submission to HMRC and pay the money back, in case it messes these up

Some HR departments will be lazy and deduct it from the future payments instead of admitting their own mistakes - this is unfair in my opinion.

PandaPieForTea · 02/09/2018 12:21

I think the most important thing is to let them know ASAP. If you wait till they notice then you look dishonest, even if you have no intention of keeping it and the payroll department deflecting their cock up by suggesting that you were trying to keep it.

Yourcoffeeormine · 02/09/2018 12:25

It just says 'NMW top up' on the pay slip If anyone has seen that before?

I'm just assuming it's because they've calculated my hours wrong

As I stated in OP i will be notifying them ASAP which is Monday when they are in the office. That was never in question nor was it my question!

I didn’t think you would - but I know plenty of people who have!

It would stress me out to have it hanging over my head so if they could take it back all at once I’d feel better about it.

Sounds like it’s the backdated rise though which is good 😊
