Treating my kids fairly

It was DD's 16th birthday recently, and I gave her a teeny tiny diamond necklace that I bought for her when she was a baby. It happened that I had had tesco vouchers for a jewellers which meant I paid about £75 for a £300 necklace, which I then put aside for her.
When I told my DD that I'd bought it for her when she was little, my youngest DS piped up 'Have you got something special for me when I'm 16?' I hadn't even thought about it.

I've got two DS, both a handful of years off 16, and have been wracking my brains since for what I could buy now to give to them in a few years. Budget up to £300 I guess, seeing as that was the 'value' of the necklace. Any and all ideas gratefully received!

A grown up watch?

Nix32 · 02/09/2018 08:21

Quality watches?

Libertymae · 02/09/2018 09:27

A watch was the only thing I could think of too! For various reasons, I'm not that keen - mostly because my Dad has put aside his old watches for them which will have much greater sentimental value as they get older. Any other suggestions?

Cuff links?

DamnWhyAreAllTheUsernamesTaken · 02/09/2018 09:37

Cuff links? A fancy wallet?

InDubiousBattle · 02/09/2018 09:43

Really smart photo album with pictures in? Scrap book type thing with tickets/momentos etc? It is harder with boys I think, jewellery is such a straight forward option!

Enidblyton1 · 02/09/2018 09:53

If your Dad has watches to give the boys, has he anything to give DD? If not, surely it’s ‘fair’ if DD gets the necklace and boys get the watches?

negomi90 · 02/09/2018 10:05

Cuff links - its the male version of expensive jewellery to wear on formal occasions.

OrdinarySnowflake · 02/09/2018 10:10

What Enid said- it's already unfair as the boys will be given family jewellery but your dd won't.

Tell them that they stand to be given valuable jewellery when they grow up from grandad and this necklace was balancing things for your dd.

Thanks for your replies, and don't worry, my Dad has DD covered too! Cuff links definitely a possibility.

A beautiful pen, or a quirky machine/ gadget like a barometer, clock, etc.

Knitjob · 03/09/2018 07:17

My boys got little silver clocks as christening presents. One is shaped like a train, one is a plane and one is a drum kit. They are really nice and would like good in a 16 yr olds bedroom or on your desk at work as a grown up.

A lovely pen sounds just right, to me.

A 16 year old might not want something like this, but a friend's father's favourite book was "Wind in the Willows" and, for his 60th, she bought him every different version she could find. He loved it.

We got DBIL a set of studs to go in a dress shirt for his 21st. Links of London mother of pearl, maybe those with cuff links?
