The proper Andrew Davies version, of course,

And yet again wishing I lived in a world that spoke like this, where manners where like this, where balls were given by respectable people. Where people read of an evening, turned about the room, called in on one another. Even the visiting for months at a time. I like cake and gossip and I have boobs that would work well in a tight empire line. I can’t be alone in this?

(Yes I know medical care was minimal, everyone died in childbirth and women had little to no power in life, but let me have my fantasy)

I think I was 15 when that came out. I was delighted when I got a balconette (?) bra which made my boobs look like theirs.

ExBbqQueen · 01/09/2018 00:31

Whilst I agree with you I think that David Rintoul made a fab Darcy. Proper gorgeous. Think it’s the voice.

Deadringer · 01/09/2018 00:59

Yes yes yes! But I think if I lived in that time/place I would probably be poor old Hill.

StillMedusa · 01/09/2018 01:03

I just love the clothes! Both men and women looked good.
The BBC version is THE definitive version for me (and one of my favourite books)

However I'd probably have ended up as Charlotte....

PawneeParksDept · 01/09/2018 01:07

I've watched it so much I know the dialogue nearly completely by heart and can say the next line

"Would he had sprained his ankle in the first dance"

"I say staircases, because there are several"

"I send no compliments to your mother you deserve no such attention"

"I should as soon call her mother a wit"

YANBU. I know you know that, but just confirming.

I was off sick the week before last. As soon as I was well enough to get out of bed and move to the sofa, this was what I put on. 6 hours, back-to-back of Colin Firth as Darcy. Bliss.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 01/09/2018 01:15

See I’ve only ever known Colin Firth as the real Mr Darcy so that’s my benchmark.

I say staircases, because there are several

🤣

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 01/09/2018 01:16

PawneeParksDept yes me and DM know it word for word too. Just perfect comfort watching Smile

TheDowagerCuntess entirely sensible! I think I probably watch the full 6 hours at least twice a year. Sometimes in a day, if not rarely more than two.

I've watched the BBC version twice this week! Mostly on in the background whilst I do tasks such as ironing. I've been in an Austen mood this week; I'm also re-reading Mansfield park.

iamloading · 01/09/2018 01:30

Ah Mr Collins and that hand to mouth thing he does in front of Lady Catherine. Classic 😂

TressiliansStone · 01/09/2018 01:34

"Wrong way, Mr Collins!"

PawneeParksDept · 01/09/2018 01:47

And if I had ever learned, I should've been a true proficient, AND SO WOULD ANNE"

Kezzie200 · 01/09/2018 04:27

I must watch again!!!

I always wonder how cold the houses were though....

mimibunz · 01/09/2018 04:35

“She’s fond of a good blaze, then.” Wickham to Mr. Collins

CarolDanvers · 01/09/2018 05:35

My favourite ever series and they were all great but Mr Collins was my stand out. He was absolutely perfect Grin

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/09/2018 06:34

Make haste - MAKE HASTE!!!

OnlyTheDepthVaries · 01/09/2018 06:34

"I'm all astonishment"

historyismything · 01/09/2018 06:40

I love the BBC version! I watched the film with Keira Knightley and it was disappointing

OliviaStabler · 01/09/2018 06:47

'Let me be rightly understood!'

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 01/09/2018 07:23

Loved the book and the series, but if I'd lived then I would probably have been one of the servants working 15 hours a day for a pittance. Shivering in the attic bedroom, no dental care, no pension plan and no career prospects.
Reading Longbourne gave the other side to this.

ShatnersBassoon · 01/09/2018 07:30

Mr Collins was standout brilliant in it, such a little toady. I'll watch it again this autumn just for him.

Cheeseplantandpickle · 01/09/2018 07:56

Watched this again last week. I enjoy noticing new things each. I watched the 1990s version of Persuasiom last week and I’m now watching Death Comes to Pemberley.

Lolly86 · 01/09/2018 08:04

I've found my people! This is my go to series. It's perfection,
"Shelves in the closet....happy thought indeed!"
"No lace Mrs Bennet I beg of you..."
"Your friends looks a genteel prettyish sort of person...."
