Mine is the rather pleasing flong, paper pulp used to make moulds in printing. What's yours?

Orthogonal. At right angles to, rather than diagonal.

I like that word very much. Thank you.

I’ve known it for ages but it’s still my favourite, so my submission is:

Defenestration. The act of throwing someone, or something, out of a window.

I like it so much that I regularly threaten my children with it when they’re being annoying. Grin

Disclaimer - they know I’m joking.

SpoonBlender · 31/08/2018 22:46

Eisegesis - choosing to read confirmation of your own ideas from a text, so sort of the complement of exegesis. And generally a bad idea done in bad faith.

Petrichor- the smell of rain after a long period of dry weather

InterstellarSleepingElla · 31/08/2018 22:58

@marvellousnightforamooncup I didn't know what that meant - I should have taken heed at the thanks to mn rather than googling!(not for the first time have I googled a word I've seen on here and wished I hadn't! 😂)

Zofloraqueen27 · 31/08/2018 23:04

Petrichor. The smell of rain when it has fallen in dry earth. (Absolutely love that smell!).

PawneeParksDept · 31/08/2018 23:05

I had to confirm if specious meant what I thought it did so specious

GoneWishing · 01/09/2018 00:04

Hypnagogic / hypnagogia - that state you're in just before you fall asleep but aren't really properly asleep.

I start "dreaming" before I'm properly asleep, so reading about this has been illuminating.

CuntyMcFuckerson · 01/09/2018 00:10

Limerence.

"The state of being infatuated or obsessed with another person, typically experienced involuntarily and characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one's feelings but not primarily for a sexual relationship."

Someone used it in that insane thread where the woman was attracted to the 3/10 guy. 😂 Had to google as hadn't heard it before!

ohamIreally · 01/09/2018 05:00

Tacchino- turkey in Italian.

Woodifer · 01/09/2018 07:12

Corvine = crow like

fissiparous = liable to break/ split,

(both in a Robert Harris book I'm reading)

Gruach · 01/09/2018 07:21

Thaumaturgy

The working of wonders or miracles./ A magician’s capability to do this.

Read in a perfume blog.

suckmasterburstingfoam · 01/09/2018 07:35

Fiché S - how France denotes someone who might be a security threat. Not a fun word, sorry!

Paperdolly · 01/09/2018 08:09

Coddiwomple. An old English verb. To go in a determined way to a vague destination.

I saw it and the explanation on the back of a motorhome last week. Love it! 😁

EyeDrops · 01/09/2018 20:44

@Paperdolly That's wonderful!!

aliceinwonderlandbrum · 01/09/2018 22:10

Sorry nothing to add!

Love this thread

LaDaronne · 03/09/2018 15:48

Here's another one: mydriasis, the dilation of the pupils not in reaction to light.
