I’m sure there is a Spanish themed food and drink thing going on in Albert square tomorrow
Go to the wash house for a cocktail (if you can find it)
Mayfield train station. Loads of funky food stalls there this weekend
20 stories high is amazing for drinks

Sorry my suggestions are all food and drink related

MiMr · 31/08/2018 10:58

Haha I don't mind the food bit! Probably won't be drinking much.

Any good museums or anything like that?

Get yourself over to Black Milk Cereal for an amazing freak shake or waffle.

MOSI (Science and Industry Museum) is walkable from the city centre, free and really good fun. It is also close to Almost Famous at the Great Northern Warehouse which is an amazing burger place.

If you're into sport then the Football Museum is the opposite end of Deansgate but also worth popping by.

DrewBarryless · 31/08/2018 11:02

Science and Technology museum? Imperial War museum? Look for the ‘bees’ that are being exhibited all over?

Meandyouandyouandme · 31/08/2018 11:02

The art gallery on Mosley Street is good, has a nice cafe as well, also there’s a bee trail at the moment, lots of colourful bees dotted around the city to spot.

AnguaUberwaldIronfoundersson · 31/08/2018 11:02

Also get over to the Craft Centre in the Northern Quarter. It is hard to find but a lovely little venue not many people know about.

Beingginger · 31/08/2018 11:07

The Manchester museum is a good day out, it’s on Oxford road near the university. They are closing the Egyptian gallery soon so worth a look.
The bee in the city trail finishes this weekend too.
The people’s history museum is worth a look and near spinningfields so loads of places to eat nearby.

Battytwatty · 31/08/2018 11:28

Yes the peoples history is worth a visit. I love the city art gallery too.

Wander round the northern quarter. Some great independent shops and cafes.
There is a tiny police museum but I’m not sure of opening times.

Find the hidden gem

I've looked online but can't find the answer.

If I want to use park and ride to get into Manchester city centre, do I have to pay for parking, the bus/tram/train or both?

Probably one of the ones north of the city, just off the M62, eg Prestwich. Are there any that are good and bad for any reason (eg can't find a space, takes ages to get into the city)?

Battytwatty · 31/08/2018 12:56

I thought park and ride was free TBH. I will have a google around

By the way, there are a couple of buses that go round the city centre that are free if you CBA walking. They are the numbers 1 and 2. I think they drive between the train stations and you can just hop on and off

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 31/08/2018 12:58

Northern quarter for nice cafes/bar/restaurants. There's a boat trip on the canal that takes you from the city centre to the Lowry and back,

Battytwatty · 31/08/2018 13:00

Yes I think it’s free but there are time restrictions. Just google park and ride Manchester, choose the location ie whitefield and check the terms and conditions

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 31/08/2018 13:09

Canal trips were surprisingly cheap too IIRC.

Rachelsholiday · 31/08/2018 13:11

National Football Museum is very central and free you can pop in there or go for a couple of hours

lastqueenofscotland · 31/08/2018 13:17

The parking at Stalybridge station is free IIRC and like 12 minutes on the train?
The footbal museum is good, the withworth gallery, yes to the northern quarter for food, highly recommend teacup for coffee and cake.

Beingginger · 31/08/2018 14:17

The park and rides are free at prestwich and Whitefield but you can’t leave your car overnight except on Friday and Saturday.

BarbaraofSevillle · 31/08/2018 14:22

Thanks. I don't want to leave a car overnight I just want to go to Manchester for a day trip for the museums, wander round, nice lunch, that sort of thing and just trying to decide between driving or train.

iklboo · 31/08/2018 14:22

Atlas Bar on Deansgate for all the gin in the world Wink

Seriously though, MOSI & Manchester Museum are really good and free. Football museum if you're into that.

A tram to Salford Quays and there's The Lowry shopping centre, Imperial War Museum, Blue Peter Gardens etc. Lots of places to eat there too.

ivykaty44 · 31/08/2018 14:27

I usual get the train, though have driven. I like the Lowry, the northern quarter for food. I like the market place at Altrincham the best though on a Sunday morning for food, the mouth in the market and a good brunch

starfleet · 31/08/2018 14:36

There are some cheaper car parks within walking distance (5 mins) of the Northern Quarter - Thompson St, Goulden St, Cable St, Addington St. Not sure of postcodes. They are not hugely expensive compared to a lot of the city car parks - around £7 all day . They are open air but not monitored. You can pre-book NCP spaces to get a better rate online. Great Northern just off Deansgate is a decent one.

Mackie Mayor is good for lunch (NQ)

OneToThree · 31/08/2018 16:43

We loved the football museum (but then our family love football)

moocowmrs · 31/08/2018 16:46

There is the Bee 🐝 in the city trail which is fun, down load the app and find the bees !

The people’s museum is good as well x
