Small car advice please! What's as good as a polo?

I'm considering getting a polo. I need 5 doors due to two small kids but otherwise it doesn't need to be large. What other makes/models should I consider? Thanks Smile

Absolutely love my Fabia. Have three children (2 small ones, biggest usually goes in front) and it's served me well. Cheap to insure, tax, service and MOT and has served me well. Very reliable and surprisingly nippy.

Honda jazz. Boring image but I love mine!

pictish · 30/08/2018 22:21

Honda Jazz - I do like mine, even with the boring image.

We've had Fiestas for years and love them. I'm buying Mr Dribble a new car soon and he wants... another Fiesta! His is 15 years old and just beginning to give up.

MikeUniformMike · 30/08/2018 22:27

I'd go for a fiesta or a honda jazz.
People think that VW and Audi make great cars but Skoda and Seat are part of the same group. I don't know anyone with an Audi who hasn't had trouble with it, and they are not cheap to repair.

IloveJudgeJudy · 30/08/2018 22:36

Skoda Fabia here. It's my first small car for years, having driven various Zafiras and estates. I love it, though I do find a small car trickier to park sometimes.

Hyundai i10 - cheap to run and no problems in 6 years from new

AlexaShutUp · 30/08/2018 22:47

Which has just said that their "best buy" small car is the Toyota Yaris hybrid.

Personally, I'd go for one of them or a Honda Jazz. Really reliable cars!

SealSong · 30/08/2018 22:54

I considered most of the cars listed above and settled on a polo last year. No regrets, super car. Will be getting another one next year (PCP loan car).

Winglet · 30/08/2018 23:14

I’ve had a Polo for 5 years and loved it, so reliable, cheap to service and fill up. I recently looked at loads of the cars mentioned above in same class but kept going back to the newer Polo. Instead I bought a Beetle. I liked my VW so much, just changed the model.

Telesto · 30/08/2018 23:16

The new Ford Ka+ is nice. It is nothing like the old Ka shape. It is a bit bigger and has 5 doors as standard with a roomyish back seat.

Fatted · 30/08/2018 23:18

I've had 2 Polos now. Frankly for that size, no other car compares. If you want something cheaper Skoda Fabia or Seat Ibiza are essentially the same car. Everyone in my family has a Seat, Skoda or VW. Apart from me with my Honda. 😁

guessmyusername · 30/08/2018 23:26

Toyota Aygo is a neat little car and gets great scores in Which Magazine

gobbynorthernbird · 30/08/2018 23:27

My mum has the Yaris hybrid (1.4 auto) mentioned by a PP. It's ace.

LarkDescending · 30/08/2018 23:38

Hyundai i20: economical and problem-free in my experience.

isabella2 · 30/08/2018 23:43

Not a Suzuki Swift according to which - I was reading it today as we are looking for a small car. It said it's very reliable but safety is poor so they've made it a don't buy. Will try to attach screenshot of article.

Small car advice please! What's as good as a polo?
isabella2 · 30/08/2018 23:45

Just reread it - it's just the newer one this seems to apply to!

Redyoyo · 30/08/2018 23:45

Another vote for the skoda fabia, we bought this for me to run about in but dh loves it so much he uses it all the time. Its a solid car and perfect for the country roads here.

Mamathebest · 30/08/2018 23:48

Seat Leon! Fab for space and isn’t too expensive.

GeneandFred · 31/08/2018 00:18

Fiesta..

The new model is amazing

TiredPony · 31/08/2018 00:31

I had this dilemma last year OP and ended up with a Polo! I love it. It's so easy to drive. I looked at other cars, I was particularly interested in a Fiesta (having sold my Focus which I loved but wanted something a bit smaller) but the pedals were off centre and felt uncomfortable. As PP has said, Skoda Fabia is a Polo with a different badge, considered it but there weren't any for sale when I was looking.
