Would this annoy you? - GP

Just visited our UCC with ds17. Before we left I asked if he could take his height as he hadn't been measured for about 3yrs.
Ds got on the height scale and doctor got up to read his height, "5ft 7! so not tall", he said, i responded thanks Hmm about to leave. Doctor then goes, don't worry you won't be picked for basket ball!'.

Was there really any need for this? DS has never had a problem with his height and quite happy with how he looks. We are a very petite family, I'm 5ft 1 dh 5ft 8 and would have been very surprised if my dc turned out to be 6ft.

I'm flabbergasted that in the time of so many MH issues amongst teenagers and obsessive attention to the body, a GP would come out with something crass like this. The odd thing though was that he was shorter than DS Confused so really couldn't understand it.

Am i being oversensitive? DS has since asked me wether I think he will grow any taller? he had never bothered about this before.

Hugely oversensitive.

The doctor was probably flabbergasted at being asked to measure a 17 year old.

Numberofthemouse · 30/08/2018 19:45

You are being ridiculous

Hasbro · 30/08/2018 19:51

Phosphorus - Whats wrong in a Dr taking a 17yr olds height? I genuinely don't understand.

Number -Why am i being ridiculous? Confused

If you weren't worried about his height why does he need measured? If dh is 5 ft 8 and ds is a tiny bit smaller surely you know

WipsGlitter · 30/08/2018 19:54

You asked for a 17 year old to be measured?! Confused

Gazelda · 30/08/2018 19:54

Why does your DS's height need measuring? If it's medical -fair enough. If it's idle curiosity - that's not the best use of a medical professional's time.
He made an off the cuff remark. Didn't insult. Didn't judge. Didn't say - that's it, you're never going to grow any more.
I don't get a) why you got him measured and
B) why you are offended.

And c) why you accompanied your DS into the doc consultation.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 30/08/2018 19:54

I imagine there’s more pressing things to do at a UCC.

If Dh is 5’8” then you probably had a good idea that ds was 5’7”...

missyB1 · 30/08/2018 19:54

Why did you want him measured?

confusedandemployed · 30/08/2018 19:55

Blimey. Precious much?

LampHat · 30/08/2018 19:56

Why did you ask him to measure your 17yo?!! ShockGrin

Brilliant.

Tinywhale · 30/08/2018 19:56

I don't understand why you didn't measure him yourself?

Crunchymum · 30/08/2018 19:56

Why were you even in the room with him. At 17 if expect my DS to be more than capable of attending a Drs appointment.

Armchairanarchist · 30/08/2018 19:58

Over sensitive I also don't ever remember taking up their time to measure one of my children.

ThePricklySheep · 30/08/2018 19:59

What’s a UCC, I’ve googled and can’t work it out?
Why don’t you measure him?

Hasbro · 30/08/2018 20:00

Just to clarify, Ds didn't go to the doctor's to take his height, we went there because he is ill. Last time his height was taken was at the physio 3 yrs ago because there was something suspect with his spine (diagnosed with scoliosis later). When we were leaving the doctor's today i just spotted the height scale by the door and asked doctor if its okay for ds to get on it to take his height? I wanted to know how much exactly he had grown since that time because of his back condition. I didn't think we were doing anything weird.

SassitudeandSparkle · 30/08/2018 20:01

Not a great remark by the doctor but why didn't you measure your son yourself? Why were you expecting the doctor to do it, it's not something they would normally do.

SassitudeandSparkle · 30/08/2018 20:03

Cross-posted - if your DS has a consultant for the scoliosis they may have a record of his height, but probably not his GP.

Hasbro · 30/08/2018 20:03

I was there with him because ds went to the UCC (by himself) last week when he first started feeling ill, but seemed to have deteriorated further even though he has been on antibiotics. This afternnoon he was complaining of severe headache and pain radiating to his throat etc lots of new symptoms.
I decided to accompany him today for support and that's when the i spotted the height scale.

UCC is an urgent care centre.

HildaZelda · 30/08/2018 20:03

I think the GP made a bit of a smart ass remark. It was certainly unnecessary. My own GP did something similar recently and I was annoyed too. I don't think you're being 'precious'.

Sorry. I’m being childish. It’s still funny though.

userblah · 30/08/2018 20:10

I genuinely wouldn't even have considered his comment as anything other than factually correct

BoobleMcB · 30/08/2018 20:11

Do you not have a tape measure anywhere in the house?

I don't think you were completely out of order asking to have him heighted, just a little random. Same with the comment, not exactly out of order, just a bit random
