Ryan Air baggage allowance

Would someone be kind enough to signpost me to where I can get details of Ryan Air’s baggage policy?

I’ve been on their website and have found out about cabin luggage policy - ie pay premium and take two bags as cabbin luggage or for no charge take two cabin bags and have one checked in the hold at no extra charge. The checked in bag is a max of 10 kilos and certain dimensions.

But is there anything else or is that it? Is the only facility to be able to check in a cabin sized bag in the hold when at the departure gate?

Thanks!

Basically you need to pay extra to keep your bag. Otherwise you have to put it in the hold.

Aridane · 30/08/2018 08:04

But is the hold bag limited to 10 kilos?

Yes, but in reality they never weigh it. They focus more on the dimensions, but even then they've never measured mine.

I mean, happy to have it in hold, just not sure whether the policy is to put in hold at gate or whether a larger bag can be put in hold (for a charge) on check in / baggage drop

We just flew Ryanair at the weekend- if you do not pay for priority tickets then any cabin baggage (small case) will be ticketed at the gate and it will be put into the hold

However if you are flying after November then they have just changed it again so that in order to take any carry on you need to pay £6 extra OR the bag must be able to fit under the seat in front of you (and you can only have 1 item so not a handbag and a carry on)

Northumberlandlass · 30/08/2018 08:09

You can pay to take more than 10kg (big suitcase) & put into hold
You can pay to take 10kg plus small handbag into cabin (they have specified dimensions for this)
You can take 10kg and not pay and it will be taken off you at the gate & put into the hold.

I flew with Ryanair last week, if you have priority booking (keeping your 10kg in cabin) they separate you at the gate.

To be honest, some of the '10kg' cases looked large and no one weighed / checked size as I had already checked in online (as required) so went straight through!

peridito · 30/08/2018 08:09

Apparently a 20kg can be checked into the hold from £25 .

HTH .I've found using their online check in and selecting options v tricky .I wanted to book a premium check and 2 carry on bags for one traveller in a party of 3 .But I just couldn't do it and have ended up booking for all 3 . But it might just be me .

We had 2 big suitcases in the hold which we paid for when I bought the tickets and they went in at the check in desk. We also put all our cabin bags in for free at the same time and just took on board small bags.

Aridane · 30/08/2018 08:10

The problem with luggage being put in the hold at the departure gate are the toiletries / liquid restrictions...

Ah, I see - thank you

They go in at the desk before you go through security

Kool4katz · 30/08/2018 08:16

No, you can still put larger bags (weight & dimensions) in the hold at check-in and pay normal hold baggage charges. You usually pay for hold baggage when you book your flight.
They are severely reducing the amount of bags that people can carry onto the plane with them because, frankly, it was getting ridiculous. (Passenger point of view)
When I last flew with them, you could still attempt to take a small 10kg flight bag with you on the plane plus handbag but the staff come round as you're queuing to board and tag some passenger bags so that you hand them over just before boarding and they're chucked in the hold. You're not charged for this and it frees up space in the cabin.

notacooldad · 30/08/2018 08:29

Every flight I have been on this year with RyanAir this year has allowed rucksacks on to the plane but not allowed cases.

If you are hand luggage only you go straight through security to your gate. A member of crew will put a tag on your bag and give you a sticker if you have not paid for priority boarding. Once you get near the steps of the plane you hand the case to the crew dealing with luggage. I am liking this method as you are not faffing around looking for locker if it's a full plane. You just walk on and sit down.
Don't try and do what I saw one woman do the other month. She hadn't paid for priority but didn't want her bag taken off her. I watched her take the tag off her bag. However once she was on the plane the crew need to see your boarding pass and straight away clocked what she had done and took her case anyway!

0hCrepe · 30/08/2018 08:32

When they take your bag off you at boarding where does it go?

notacooldad · 30/08/2018 08:34

ohcrepe
You carry your bag to the steps of the plane and there is a crew there with a trailer. The bags on the trailer and they drive it round to the hold and put it in there. You next se your bag on the carousel.

0hCrepe · 30/08/2018 08:36

Oh I didn’t know as we put everything in the hold anyway. I thought people used cabin bags to save time on arrival and that that was allowed?

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 09:20

People use cabin bags to save time, but also money, if they can get away with no hold luggage, which costs about £50 per case per return flight on Ryanair and most other low cost airlines.

You can still put cabin bags in the cabin if you pay priority. It means you can tke two bags on e.g. Cabin bag and a handbag.
Rucksacks and soft sports bags are also ok to go in the cabin. It's just the small cases.
To be honest I find it easier. You hand your case over at the gate and sit down quicker. I know if I've been at the back of the queue in the past I have ended up near the front and my case hs been near the back of the plane and that is just a faff!

Aridane · 02/09/2018 06:45

Thanks, all. In the end I didn’t book with Ryan Air as the timing didn’t work out (arriving on a day / tine when Gatwick trains not running and weird bus combinations required).

Had thought charges for baggage were confined to Ryan Air and Easy Jet but they’d als apply for the tickets I’ve booked via British Airways and Air Portugal.

I flew with them a few weeks ago, you can take two small bags with you, a hand bag or small ruck sack and a normal sized cabin bag. They take the cabin bag off you at the departure gate and it goes in the hold. If you want to keep it with you and put it in the cupboards above your head for a quicker departure you have to pay.

LoniceraJaponica · 02/09/2018 06:57

I think more and more airlines are following the Ryanair model. Package holidays seem to be the exception these days.
