Hotel room not made up - would this bother you?

Back from a day trip and hotel room hasn’t been touched. So beds unmade, bathroom not freshened or cups cleaned and water, coffee etc not replaced.

I mentioned it to a member of staff before dinner and asked if it could be done. Just come upstairs and it is still untouched, so I’ve just made the beds, folded the towels (we’d left in bath to be replaced) and washed the cups.

We are only away for 4 nights and hotel is £200 b&b per night (special holiday we have saved up for).

Would this bother you?

I always hated coming back to a hotel room and seeing that someone had been moving my stuff around and tidying up after me. It didn't occur to me for years that I could just leave the do not disturb sign on the door and know that the room would be my private space even when I am elsewhere.

I don't want fresh towels every day and I am capable of asking downstairs for fresh tea/coffee/clean cups.

"Turn Downs" is another service in posh hotels that I utterly hate.

Ignoramusgiganticus · 30/08/2018 09:07

I'd probably not be bothered at a cheapie hotel. But I would for £200 per night. I'd be very unhappy.

maxthemartian · 30/08/2018 09:11

Yes I'd be bothered by this. Especially at that price.

I would politely mention and if not rectified would politely mention again. Over the years when such things have occasionally happened we have been given a free meal, offer to send up drinks, money off bill.

Would it give me the rage? No it's miniscule in the context of life events.

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 09:17

Joins the minority who would find that my hotel room not being touched quite pleasing.

No need to unmake the bed and get rid of all the pointless cushions and throws so I can actually use it.

I stayed in a hotel that would give you a free drink at the bar if you didn't have your room serviced, which I thought was a great idea. Sadly I was only staying one night, so couldn't benefit.

Witchend · 30/08/2018 10:33

Not at all. I can make a bed, rince out the cups and don't need fresh towels every day.

Only thing would be if I'd used all the coffee/tea/ whatever, but I'd go down to reception and ask for those

We had this recently too OP. Housekeeping would knock at 8-8.30 am which was too early for us as we were still in bed! I asked her to come back after 10 when we would be out. Twice we came back to the room not done. Both times I rang housekeeping to explain this and they said they would do it immediately, which wasn't ideal as we were back from a busy day and wanted to shower and chill out before going back out for dinner.

They also knocked on at 5.30 for the turndown!

BarbaraofSevillle · 30/08/2018 11:09

What is the point of a turn down? They come in early in the day and make the bed and then come back later to unmake it a bit Confused.

I was once in a hotel while working nights. I arrived at the hotel after a 24 hour shift (weird emergency thing), put the DND sign up and tried to sleep, only to be disturbed by the sounds of vacuuming in neighbouring rooms and Housekeeping, knocking on the door repeatedly, interspesed by phoning and in both cases ignoring polite requests to go away.

And just last week I stayed in a hotel near an airport and the room bumpf said something to the effect of 'we recognise some residents may be on layovers, therefore we will try to access the room periodically until 1 pm, at which time, if we haven't gained access, we will service the room anyway'. I had visions of them making beds with people still in them and hope none of the people on layovers are aircrew trying to get some sleep before going off to fly a plane again.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 30/08/2018 11:20

They didn't unmake the bed at turndown. They left a chocolate Grin and water with a glass next to the bed, closed the curtains and put the air con on, removed any wet towels from the bathroom and restocked shampoo/body wash etc. In the last hotel we were paying €500 a night so would expect a turndown for that amount!

LeakyDrains · 30/08/2018 11:24

It should have been done - it’s part of the package.

SassitudeandSparkle · 30/08/2018 11:26

We also had to hang something on the door to get the room made up the other week - we'd stayed in this hotel before and not had to do that previously.

NonaGrey · 30/08/2018 11:31

Yes I would be annoyed, particularly given you have already reminded them at reception.

We were missed out during a hotel stay recently, we mentioned it to the desk and it was immediately rectified.

I’d be politely asking to speak to the Duty Manager too.

amusedbush · 30/08/2018 12:31

We always leave the do not disturb sign on the door so that housekeeping don't have to make up our room, so it wouldn't bother me to be missed out on such a short trip. Our last holiday was ten nights and we only asked for the room to be made up every 3-4 days.

FilledSoda · 30/08/2018 12:37

I would not be impressed at all, especially as they had the opportunity to fix it and didn't !

Lweji · 30/08/2018 14:16

In the last hotel we were paying €500 a night so would expect a turndown for that amount!

For that amount, I'd expect to be tucked into bed too. Wink

MaxPepsi · 30/08/2018 14:26

Wouldn't bother me initially, mistakes happen etc.

However if I had asked for it to be rectified and was ignored, that would piss me off and I would raise it with the manager.

theunsure · 30/08/2018 14:29

Yes - I'd be complaining. It is one thing to make a mistake but they should be sorting it out. You should not have to ask twice.

Make sure you review the hotel thoroughly afterwards!

OneThingAndThenTheNext · 30/08/2018 14:34

Asking for it after it was missed and it not being done then would really make me cross!

Silentnighttwo · 30/08/2018 23:42

Thanks for all the responses.

We mentioned it at check out today and were told we must have been in the room so that’s why it wasn’t done. When we pointed out that we’d been out all day, we got “Oh sorry” Hmm.

Really poor customer service.
