Toddler holding food / drink in mouth - help!

One of my twins (nearly 2) has had a habit for a while of holding water in his mouth and then spitting it down himself, which is annoying enough.

A few days ago I was changing him after lunch before his nap, and he was doing a weird giggle - I noticed he was holding his mouth weirdly. I tried to open his mouth to see what was going on and loads of water dribbled out. He thought this was very funny.

Today, I was putting him down for a nap after lunch. He wouldn’t take his bottle which is weird for him. I left him to go and bring his brother upstairs.

I tried giving him his bottle again and he started giggling - I opened his mouth and he had a mouthful of chewed up crumpet which he wouldn’t swallow. I had to scoop it out. I dread to think what could have happened if he’d fallen asleep with a mouth full of chewed up food - I feel awful for not noticing it sooner.

Has anyone else’s toddler done this? Any idea why or how to stop it? I’m really worried he will choke or something.

My wee guy has started this he's nearly 1 and just everytime I'm putting him for a nap or leaving the room I check his mouth (which he dosent like) so hopefully he'll soon stop 😊
