If you couldn’t do any food shopping from now...

How long could you last feeding your family on what’s already in your house? I’ve always been a bit of a food hoarder and eat a lot of staples (beans, lentils, rice, pasta) that are easy to store, but I’ve just looked round now and reckon I could probably feed us (just me and DP) adequately for a month definitely, maybe longer at a push, on just what I’ve currently got. How would you fair?

Might take myself up on my own challenge and see how long I can go without a food shop. If I can at least buy milk for my coffee as that’s the only thing I’m low on!

I live alone so maybe two months? Got lots of cupboard and freezer things. Then again, I only eat one meal a day.

porkinmyteeth · 28/08/2018 18:56

About 3 days

YeTalkShiteHen · 28/08/2018 18:56

I reckon a month, maybe two. It’s a running joke that I’m a stockpiler but having been on the bones of my arse more than once, it’s not a feeling that ever leaves you.

So I have a compulsion to make sure my kids never know what it’s like to be hungry or go without.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 28/08/2018 18:56

I’ve literally just got back from doing a big shop at least a week!

I could last maybe a month I think, I’ve just stocked up on beans and stuff and I’m good at cobbling stuff together. DH isnt Hmm

QuitMoaning · 28/08/2018 18:57

But Tuesday is my shopping day so I start out on back foot.

I guess quite a long time but mainly as my OH has his his commercial freezers in our garage storing maybe 400kg of frozen fish....

If I excluded that, then probably only about 2 weeks (unless my son comes home from Uni, cos then it changes to about 20 minutes)

PurpleDaisies · 28/08/2018 18:57

Probably about a month. The freezer is jam packed at the moment.

icelollycraving · 28/08/2018 18:58

I have three freezers which are full. Decent stock cupboard and a lot of snacks.
If I could buy milk and bread, maybe a month.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 28/08/2018 18:58

I only buy fresh stuff really so probably only about a week!

Catspyjamazzzz · 28/08/2018 19:00

Maybe Sunday. But we would run out of milk tomorrow and if I couldn’t have proper tea I would murder someone fairly quickly.

WooYa · 28/08/2018 19:00

Probably about 3 weeks... I did a LOT of batch cooking last week

megletthesecond · 28/08/2018 19:00

About 4 days eating the fresher stuff.
Once that's gone it would be dried goods and very plain food for a week or so.

theunsure · 28/08/2018 19:01

4-5 days max. We don’t keep much in.
My Dad is a food hoarder, I’m the opposite and we keep very little in and shop twice weekly (1 online, 1 top up).
We have hens though so steady supply of eggs!

If snow forecast we stock up as we often get cut off, but not bothered the rest of the year.

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 28/08/2018 19:03

@NotUmbongoUnchained no rice/pasta/beans?

@YeTalkShiteHen I’ve also been in the position of having no food/money for food too which definitely encourages the feeling of needing to stockpile.

I’ve got two full fridge/freezers, and lots in cupboards as well, including spices and sauces. I’m good at making things up as I go along as well. I think I’d struggle with no fresh veg or milk after a while though, so might need to make an exception for those, and coffee if I run out. But really keep it to only buying actual essentials... I’m kind of up for this!

@Catspyjamazzzz yes I think an exception might need to be made for milk

YeTalkShiteHen · 28/08/2018 19:05

Oh I’d run out of coffee and be a nightmare before the 2 months. Fresh stuff would be ok, because I don’t mind frozen fruit/veg but milk would be a struggle.

Aye it’s definitely a throwback for me, never want to feel that fear again!

AdoraBell · 28/08/2018 19:10

I cancelled my supermarket order this week because I realised I just don’t need more food.

Having grown up poor and then lived in an earthquake prone country I have become a bit of a hoarder.

We could probably eat for a week if everything went to pot.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 28/08/2018 19:11

Oh yeah lots of rice! Pasta my husband makes, because I he bought a pasta maker and is proving a point because I said he would never use it Grin
Do you mean baked beans? We don’t eat them.

teenagetantrums · 28/08/2018 19:16

Maybe 2weeks but it would be boring pasta or rice after a week. Although we do have an allotment there is lots veg up there nearly ready so maybe 3 weeks

IsTheRainEverComingBack · 28/08/2018 19:22

@NotUmbongoUnchained any beans/legumes - chickpeas, black beans, kidney beans etc. I’ve got loads, tinned mostly

OP posts:
NotUmbongoUnchained · 28/08/2018 19:24

No we don’t really eat that stuff! We have edamame beans in the shells because the kids like to pop them. My cupboard is mostly full of spices. (And lazy garlic, lazy ginger, lazy chillies) Grin

NotTired · 28/08/2018 19:28

I'd say 2 weeks. I can't wait to move house and hopefully have the space for a chest freezer and stock up.

Isentthesignal · 28/08/2018 19:29

On holidays - so one day with a lot of moaning

supadupapupascupa · 28/08/2018 19:29

Two weeks. But we’d be constipated :-)

onetimeposter · 28/08/2018 19:30

Lentils Hmm
Who T F eats lentils?

OutPinked · 28/08/2018 19:31

A week but it wouldn’t be easy. I don’t have enough milk in to last the week so that would be an almighty struggle for us and it would be pasta and rice towards the end.
