Amazon Fire Stick

We're thinking of cancelling our TV package from Virgin Media and buying an Amazon Fire Stick.

I know nothing about it what so ever. I've had a quick look on Amazon and tried to find some reviews, but we all know the only place to get the low down and the truth on absolutely any topic is Mumsnet! Grin

So, help me out here, what's the deal? I seriously know nothing.

We have Prime and Netflix, which we got when we cancelled Sky. Tbh I dont watch much tv but the DC do. They like Netflix and rarely use Prime tv. DH watches some things on Prime. Can't say I've ever found that much to watch on it that appealed to me. Netflix, however, has loads of good stuff.

A firestick by itself is nothing like the VM media package. It just gives you access to YouTube and whatever Amazon put for free on Amazon Video, plus whatever's free from other apps you can install on it. It's basically like an Android tablet where your TV is the screen.

If you already have Amazon Prime then you get Amazon Prime Video, the available library of which is of variable quality (though I guess it depends what you like). Even if you have Prime you'd have to pay more for the Amazon music service.

I cancelled my second Virgin box, so have a Firestick in my upstairs TV.

I use it for Iplayer (which includes live TV), Netflix, and Amazon Prime. There are also lots of other apps, such a YouTube, ITV player, Channel 4.

It’s good as long as you have reliable WiFi.

We've got Netflix and Prime Video. We had Prime anyway so when we got a smart tv we thought we might as well buy a firestick.

There are 3 of us (me, dp and teenage dd) and we definitely use Netflix a lot more. There are lots of boxsets and films that suit all of our tastes. Plenty that we watch as a family and also ones to enjoy on our own. There's a good mixture of new and old/classic with the TV.

We don't watch a lot of the TV on Prime. There's literally been a couple of series that dd's enjoyed and a couple that I've enjoyed. Quite often I've wondered if they have something, searched for it and then found that you have to pay per episode as it's not included in Prime.

But Prime is very good for films. I tend to download a load onto my tablet to take on holiday.

Ah thank you. It's just me and DH really and tbh it's just DH! I don't watch anything much.

I will report back to him.
