Please tell me your secret (or not so secret) gems of places!! We're moving house, 2 young dc, and want to live in a village or near smallish town with a fun, friendly vibe. Arty and down to earth too if that's not too much to ask. We have always lived in places with not much sense of community, and would love to have that.

To be honest, out of Bruton and Castle Cary I would pick the latter every time. It’s far prettier in my opinion, plus has a mainline train. Having said that, if you’re planning on driving I think commuting to Bristol could be incredibly stressful. I did it for a while and in peak times it could take upwards of two hours to drive the 30 something miles to Bristol city centre - the A37 is a disaster. You may be better looking at somewhere with easy access to the M5, or quick train links.

I am so grateful to you all..... it's so inspiring to read all your posts and i now feel a little spoiled for choice! Sorry not to respond much but we have a lot going on this week! I have particularly enjoyed the views on Bruton as it's a place i couldn't quite work out!

The pretentious Sunday supplement view of Bruton, or the idea you might get from it if you’re just visiting ‘the sights’ (e.g hauser and wirth and the chapel) are very different to the reality of it.

The reality is much nicer Smile
