Anyone been to Titanic Experience, Belfast?

I’m looking at having a couple of days in Belfast with my DD who is 4, 5 in Jan. I am a bit of a Titanic nerd and would love to go to the Titanic experience but I don’t know whether it would be suitable for her. I don’t think she’d be upset by it - we’ve talked about what happened basic terms - but I’m not sure if any of the exhibits would be targeted at her age group. If she’s bored by it it won’t be an enjoyable time for me either Grin Anyone got any experience?

Any other exciting Belfast recommendations gratefully received Smile

6yo DS1 has been twice and he loves it, most of the exhibits are aimed at adults but there is enough to keep kids amused and interested. It’s definitely worth visiting and it would be a real pity for someone who’s interested in Titanic to visit Belfast and not see it!

W5 is great for kids and is near Titanic so you could combine the two !

DrMidgeryMargery · 28/08/2018 15:52

Ooh thanks pearpicking W5 looks great! I would be a bit gutted to miss out on the Titanic Experience 😊

I've been to both W5 and Titanic. Both are great. Go to Titanic first. You'll definitely spend more time at W5 with the kids and they might not want to leave.

implantsandaDyson · 28/08/2018 15:59

What area are you staying in? Ulster Museum is good for that age - I lived in it at weekends when mine were that age - plus it's free so it's not a pain if you need to leave. If it's not too wet Botanic Gardens are right there too - lots of room to run Grin. The MAC in the centre used to have a kids room in it - I'm not sure if it still does. Will you have access to a car?

chipshape · 28/08/2018 16:06

The day I went (without my kids) it was so unbelievably busy we couldn't get near the information to read it. I was disappointed because I'd heard great things.

Tidythatmess · 28/08/2018 16:10

W5 W5 W5!

DrMidgeryMargery · 28/08/2018 16:19

Looks like W5 is a must then 😁 thanks everyone!

No I won’t have a car implants (great name btw) but I was hoping to get a bus tour to the giants causeway. I haven’t booked a hotel yet, but was hoping for somewhere around the titanic experience, maybe the titanic hotel? Ulster museum does look great though. I always plan to do too much and then never have time and end up wishing I’d booked longer Grin

The Premier Inn is a two minute walk away from the Titanic Museum, we stayed here recently and it is great. Not sure I'd bother with the Giant's Causeway especially with a four year old.

StripySocksAndDocs · 28/08/2018 16:37

Titanic is brilliant I highly recommend the White Star Premium pass (expensive but worth it). BUT your DD is probably too young. You'll miss out on things because she'll lose interest too soon.

Titanic Hotel looks fab (pricey and a feel it's aimed at grown ups).
premier inn near too as already said
jurys inn is well located for the city (and you can get the hop on hop off bus to get too Titanic or W5).

Recommend Made in Belfast for dinner

ifiwasabutterfly · 28/08/2018 16:40

W5 is great. The kids also liked the hop on hop off bus. I know they aren't cheap but it kept them interested. We did do giants causeway and the bridge. DS was only 6 and enjoyed both, but we had a car and drove ourselves there instead of a tour.

implantsandaDyson · 28/08/2018 16:46

Thanks - it's my fave name so far Grin. My older two are a bit older and have enjoyed the Titanic museum but they enjoyed going to the Nomadic more ( you get tickets for both when you buy the Titanic Museum ticket).

LondonJax · 28/08/2018 16:54

I'll second the Premier Inn. With a 10 year old we managed to get to W5 then the cinema and dash through the rain in 10mins to the Premier Inn. Then a lovely walk across the dockyard area to Titanic.

We hired a car and did the giants causeway and the Dark Hedges (used in the Game of Thrones programme...I know, I am very sad....)

The Premier Inn etc is a very short taxi ride from the airport - I'd go back in a shot. Great fun at W5 (I thought I'd be bored but I had trouble leaving myself!) and Titanic was amazing.

Cleebope2 · 28/08/2018 16:59

I have been many times. Children will enjoy it but you will appreciate it more although with children in tow adults don’t get to read all the info. It’s done in a very tasteful way and won’t upset children at all.

DrMidgeryMargery · 28/08/2018 18:12

Holy crap I can’t believe I didn’t think of the GoT stuff LondonJax. Of course! Thanks for that 😁 I’m also a GoT nerd as well as a Titanic one - our summer holiday was Dubrovnik. Totally over DDs head, of course!

I went with DD who is 6 over the summer and she enjoyed it and didn't find it upsetting at all. They hand out activity sheets at the start for kids and they have to find a certain character hidden in each section. Gives adults a bit of time to read the info while they are looking!

We stayed in the Titanic hotel and it was great, bit of a distance from the city centre though. Breakfast was really good

Lazypoolday · 28/08/2018 18:20

We could see a bit of the game of thrones set from the hotel which was cool. Unfortunately they don't do studio tours though.

TowerRingInferno · 28/08/2018 18:25

TItanic Museum is fantastic. One of the best museums I’ve visited but I think your dd is a bit young which might stop you enjoying it. She wouldnt find it upsetting though.

Overrunwithlego · 28/08/2018 18:28

We went last month with a 10 year old (big titanic fan) and a 7 year old. I think a 4 year old would be fine - get the audio guide probably to assist. Bizarrely not much of the experience focuses on the disaster itself - there are 9 galleries, devoted to Belfast, the design and building. There are mock ups of cabins etc. There was one gallery on the sinking and another one on the aftermath but actually it it tells a much wider story. We stayed at the premier inn - the titanic hotel was pricy as their only family room wasn’t available so it would have meant two twins. But we did have dinner there one night - there is a big picture of it when it was the drawing offices of H&W in the experience, so it was nice to follow up there. We also did the causeway etc having hired a car. And an open top bus of Belfast - a lot through the falls road etc, so probably a bit too much for a 4 year old. C.S. Lewis square is nice if they are aware of the lion, the witch and the wardrobe though - sculptures of each of the main characters.

DrMidgeryMargery · 28/08/2018 19:17

Ooh I didn’t know about the CS Lewis stuff, that’s another thing to add to the list, thanks Overrun

And thanks for all the Travelodge suggestions, it’s coming up much cheaper than some of the booking sites I’ve looked at.

fivedogstofeed · 28/08/2018 20:20

I've never met a child who didn't love the Titanic museum.
Book your tickets online before you go - it's cheaper and you'll make sure you get in at a time you want ( I've heard if there's a cruise ship in town it can be booked up)
If you go to CS Lewis Square it's only 5-10 mins more to Stormont where there's a lovely park for children in the grounds of the parliament buildings.

FreeButtonBee · 28/08/2018 20:27

The food is also really excellent in the cafe. The kids meal was really good - fabulous chips! 😄

DrMidgeryMargery · 29/08/2018 14:17

Thanks for all the tips everyone 😁 I’m really looking forward to it!
