Piano question...

We have been very kindly gifted an electric piano by FIL its about 25 years old so no longer listed on Roland's website.

The problem is it has no socket? So we can't actually turn it on. It's worth about £2k so I don't want to just get rid of it!

Any ideas? I have attached a photo of the power socket(?)...

I guess it's a question for an electrician?

kaytee87 · 28/08/2018 12:14

You need an electrician to look at it.

WhatHaveIFound · 28/08/2018 12:19

It probably just had a very specific mains attachment. A trained electrician may be able to change that sockets on the end of the wire to a more standard 'kettle type' fitting.

If not then i guess if you knew the model number, Roland would be able to supply a spare part even if they no longer sell that model.

There'll be a hole on the back/ side of the actual piano and will need a specific adapter for that.

If you can find the hole, we'll be able to tell you the adapter you need. It may be that the adapter you have isn't the right one for the piano.

That is the power cable in the photo...I just obviously can't plug it in to the wall and have no adapter for it. I will email Roland and then call an electrician if they can't help.

Thanks for all the replies Brew

Are you sure that is a power socket ? Most electric/digital pianos have a MIDI socket and I think the plug in your picture could well be for that.

I would take pictures of all the sockets etc. and get advice from a music shop or from Roland directly. It may just be a question of obtaining a suitable power cord.

BTW, my piano teacher has a Roland. They sound terrific.

SallyDog · 28/08/2018 13:36

Great, thanks!

I will go home and search for a "hole" where a power cable might go! I have also got hold of the local Roland supplier so can ask them to take a look too.

Right - I had the totally wrong cable. It was a "midi" - thanks Indigo. I am now guessing it's just an AC power cable that I need?

I think this £2 cable will do the job...

It looks like an ordinary 240v power lead like those supplied with portable CD players, cassette players, satellite receivers and so on.
I think 'figure 8' might be the technical term.

Sandstormbrewing · 28/08/2018 15:17

It's a square figure 8 cable, not a standard figure 8 cable.

More common in America, so you might need to buy an american one and then a plug adapter.
