Stupidly burnt hand, can't sleep

About an hour ago I dropped the kettle and spilt it all over my hand. I don't think it's serious enough to waste doctors time at A&E so I think I'll have to wait till tomorrow to maybe go to a minor injurys unit. Until then I've submerged it in cold water, I couldn't feel any pain up until now but all of a sudden it's hit me and I don't think I'm going to be sleeping tonight now. Anybody got ant tips for the pain? I have work in the morning too, I'm not even sure it's bad enough to take a sick day. Argh why am I so clumsy Sad

Aloe Vera gel on the burn if you have it. Liberal application. Paracetamol for pain relief. Hope that helps

yorkshireyummymummy · 28/08/2018 00:49

Oh God. You poor thing.
How about putting some ice cubes in a bag then wrapping it in a tea towel and round your hand. I have done that a few times.
It’s only pain free ( I find ) whenits submerged in cold water so you could try sitting on the sofa for the next couple of hours with your hand in cold water ( you will have to change it when it warms up) and hope you drop off.
I didn’t want to read and run as I truly feel your pain -but how bad is it? How long was it before you got the tap on to the burn? If you have a large area of burn I think I would be going to A&E. Better to be safe than sorry. It’s really hard to judge without seeing it but if it’s so bad you can’t sleep then that suggests it’s a bad burn.

I hope it feels better soon and it’s not too bad.

Keep your hand submerged in a glass of water (as you lie in bed), you will need to refresh the water a couple of times so it keeps nice and cool. At some point you will be able to take it out without the excruciating pain and it will be fine in the morning.

I have done this a few times now and also find that after a good long soak in cold water and long hot covering of sudocreme also really helps me but lots of people say not to put anything oily on.
I hope you feel better soon.

When I burnt the tips of my fingers by stupidly picking up a dish from the oven, I found that holding an ice pack helped take the sting out of it. Make sure there's a spare one ready in the freezer for when you need to swap.

Solasum · 28/08/2018 00:50

Is it still warm to touch? If so, put it back under cold running water for as long as you can bear.

If it is an area bigger than the palm of your hand, you need medical attention.

feliciabirthgiver · 28/08/2018 00:50

Long hot should be light!

SilverHairedCat · 28/08/2018 00:53

How large is the area of the burn? How deep is it? Any blistering? Is the skin broken?

Leyani · 28/08/2018 00:56

I think in first aid we were told to go to A&E if it was bad burns on hands, face or joints.
Otherwise we were told to cover the burn well to avoid infection - clear plastic bag or a few layers of cling film but don’t make it tight as area might swell.
OTC painkillers - paracetamol or ibuprofen alternated, or codeine if pain is bad - and antibiotic cream if available

Elevate the hand if you can

I’d get it seen tomorrow in any case

Good luck catching some sleep!

Leyani · 28/08/2018 00:57

Ps Cool or tepid running water is best, ice is not recommended as it can make matters worse

Stupidhand · 28/08/2018 00:59

No blistering yet. Just very red. It's half the back of my hand, my whole thumb and half of two fingers. It's still very warm to touch so will keep with cold water Sad

Do NOT use aloe Vera or any cream at all.

Do NOT use ice

(sorry but just trying to make the post stand out)

If it feels better submerged, keep it under cool (not cold) water.

How big is the scald? Is it your whole hand? It sounds like you might need medical attention.

I burnt the tip of one finger recently on the oven, and had to keep it in cool water for about 2 hours or there was an incredible pain. That was a tiny burn though. If you've poured boiling water over your whole hand I think you should go to A&E, or at least ring 111 for advice.

perhapstomorrow · 28/08/2018 01:03

Have you got any Lemsip or something similar as that will have paracetamol in it?

Smellyrose · 28/08/2018 01:05

DH had to sleep with his hand in a bowl of iced water once, when he burnt it late evening - did the trick though, it felt a lot better next day (it was bad enough for him to consider hospital, but thought A&E would be a horrible wait on a Saturday night).

IWantMyHatBack · 28/08/2018 01:08

Xpost. If it's still warm then it's gone deep. Keep it under cool water for as long as you need. As long as its not your whole hand you shouldn't need A&E (advice is if the burn is bigger than the palm of your hand, then you need to seek medical advice).

Cool your hand, but remember to keep the rest of you warm. Hand in cold water will cool you off quickly, which won't help at all.

IWantMyHatBack · 28/08/2018 01:09

Any calpol or kid nurofen in the house?

EwItsAHooman · 28/08/2018 06:35

DO NOT put any creams or gels on a burn and DO NOT use ice as this can cause further damage.

It sounds like you may need to get it checked at the walk-in as the total surface area is a burn larger than the palm of your hand, this is especially important if any blisters have formed overnight.

Newkitchenideas1 · 28/08/2018 06:40

I burnt my whole face with water a few years ago. A&E made me sit with cool running water over it for at least 20 mins although I sat for much longer as I was worried about it continuing to burn. They then have me a vaseline type cream to put on top and that’s the only thing that stopped the burn as it covers the nerve endings.
The water shouldn’t be freezing cold but it sounds like you should get it checked out. I was sent home within 2.5 hours as the skin wasn’t broken at that point but they did have to send photos of my burns to a specialist burns unit for advice.
Hope it’s not too bad this morning for you Flowers

MintGreen · 28/08/2018 06:41

I've had this exact same injury, same cause. I left it overnight, went to work in the morning and my boss insisted on driving me straight to A&E, the staff couldn't believe I didn't go in straight away. Apparently it was a deep burn, all my skin blistered then peeled off and it looked pretty hideous for a while, although my hand is now absolutely fine. But they said leaving it so long before seeking medical attention didn't help my chances of not scarring. So I would suggest getting it seen ASAP, it's definitely worth a sick day.
