Well you're definitely not taking it in the cabin!

user1495884620 · 27/08/2018 20:50

Must be a similar size and shape to skis, presumably people take them on ski holidays. Please tell us WHY you want to take a sword on a plane!

chipsandgin · 27/08/2018 20:51

Er, no Hmm

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 27/08/2018 20:52

Uma Thurman, is that you?

lunar1 · 27/08/2018 20:52

I usually take two, you can never be too careful.

BoneyBackJefferson · 27/08/2018 20:56

A long time ago now but when Hale and Pace toured Canada they had there prop sword taken off them at customs.

I suspect there will be a way to get it through.

AlbusPercival · 27/08/2018 20:59

Sharp?

Either way would have to go in the hole

NotNachoing · 27/08/2018 21:00

No I don't think you can. A friend needed to take a family military sword (family tradition to cut cake with it) to his sibling's wedding in Europe. He had to courier it.

You need to look at customs regulations at each end as well. If you can find a plane that will carry a sword, doesn't mean that you will get it into the country at the other end. (Unless it is an internal flight, of course.)

AgentProvocateur · 27/08/2018 21:03

It’ll be fine in hand luggage as long as it weighs less than 7kg Grin

DianaT1969 · 27/08/2018 21:05

I haven't any experience of taking sharp, lethal weapons on a plane. But I can tell you that it's hard to get a tube of moisturiser or toothpaste on.

AlbusPercival · 27/08/2018 21:09

Ooops awkward typo.

DH is a reenactor and has taken his around Europe

PeridotCricket · 27/08/2018 21:12

Easy jet. U.K. only. And yes, military for cake cutting,!

Grin Uma is that you?

You really thought it woukd be acceotable to take in cabin

Of course you put in the hold just dont fly BA

Asdf12345 · 27/08/2018 21:16

I have flown with firearms a few times. Airlines vary in how helpful they are with firearms but I wouldn't expect any huge issues with a sword. Phone ahead to make arrangements and be prepared to pay extra (usually about £25) if they want to handle it by the same rules as a firearm. If they do you will need a suitable lockable box.

PuntCuffin · 27/08/2018 21:20

I have experience of taking a 9mm pistol through airport security. It was fine wrapped in hessian. Friend took a pocketful of rounds through an airport scanner too without being stopped.

Be blatant, just walk through with it in its scabbard, you'll be fine.

TooTrueToBeGood · 27/08/2018 21:21

Most airlines will allow firearms in the hold as long as they're legal (including customs and police approval) but they have very specific requirements and procedures. No idea about swords but it's not really a question to depend on MN for an answer. You need to speak to the airline. Whimpering "but mumsnet said it was ok" won't help much when you've got your face pressed to the floor and the business end of an armed police officer aimed at the back of your skull.

PhilomenaButterfly · 27/08/2018 21:26

No, but a friend had an axe sticking out of his backpack on his motorbike, and our friend the druid who thinks he's King Arthur (yes, really) carries Excalibur on the tube.

TheOrigRightsofwomen · 27/08/2018 21:31

Ryan Air just changed their baggage policy again. I bet for enough money you can get priority boarding and extra leg room seat for your sword

inquiquotiokixul · 27/08/2018 21:41

Airport Security confiscated my (6yo) DS's very obviously plastic roman sword. He was allowed to keep the scabbard.

aperolspritzplease · 27/08/2018 21:43

Erm no!

But you can travel with ceremonial items but I think you have to declare them and check them. You can't waltz on board with a sword!!

PatriciaHolm · 27/08/2018 21:51

Swords are fine in the hold, not the cabin.
