Other than the obvious, what does trampolino mean - specifically 'il trampolino del Papa'?

It's giving me visions of a bouncing Pontiff, but much as I desperately wish that were true, I can't quite see it. He'd lose his hat, for starters. Grin

Place marking because I was wondering too.

happypoobum · 27/08/2018 13:27

Trampolino is often used with regards to a high diving board or a high place you might jump off like if you were bungee jumping.

Does that help? What is the context?

Camomila · 27/08/2018 13:33

Papa is pope
Papa' is daddy
Pappa is a childish word for food

So that sentence is 'dad's trampoline' not the pope's trampoline.

Sorry to all those imagining bouncing pontiffs. Smile

Camomila · 27/08/2018 13:34

BlushBlush Oh ignore me that was a speech mark not an accent you put.

...slinks off.

BoatDad · 27/08/2018 13:36

Could it be the pope's balcony?

Camomila · 27/08/2018 13:41

I googled it and the article I found seemed to be talking about a monthly fair in Rome...I'm going to make DM read it and explain it to me now I'm so curious!

conycavy · 27/08/2018 14:00

Can you link to where you saw it? I've googled it on google.it and nothing comes up. Without context it's very hard to say!

TheSpottedZebra · 27/08/2018 14:04

What's the context? Trampolino is also used as a metaphor for springboard, launching pad etc - ie it suggests a next step or a change in direction.

AviatorShades · 27/08/2018 14:11

I googled it too. Is Himself near Castel Gandolfo atm? It mentions Trampolino del Papa on the lake. It also mentioned shit houses on the lake,or that's what I thought it said - til I moved my curser...so...STILT houses, then.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 27/08/2018 14:18

I saw it as part of the coverage on his trip to Ireland. Next step or change in direction would make sense.

CeeCeeAndAida · 27/08/2018 14:21

I think the Pope has been/is in Ireland at the moment and has made some kind of statement/apology and pleas for forgiveness to the Catholic Church about all the abuse scandals www.theguardian.com/world/2018/aug/26/thousands-greet-pope-francis-on-arrival-in-irish-village-of-knock - in which case TheSpottedZebra's interpretation is probably correct?

Spudlet · 27/08/2018 14:22

Yes, the context is Castel Gandolfo (where the pope has his summer residence), so I think it is something to do with that.

Here's the full passage:

Da uno straordinario punto di vista vi racconteremo e vi faremo vedere alcuni importantissimi spot storici del lago dove gli antichi romani amavano “giocare” guardando le Naumachie (simulazioni di battaglie navali), oppure il trampolino del Papa , tanto amato dai pontefici durante il periodo estivo o siti archeologici preistorici visibili sono in canoa perché totalmente sommersi in acqua e non accessibili dalla riva.

Should also have mentioned the fact that it's not from a news site, it's a website offering kayak tours of the lake.

I still cherish the vision of the pope doing backflips, I can't lie Grin

I do actually speak Italian, albeit it's been a few years since I used it. But il trampolino del Papa has got me!

OP posts:
conycavy · 27/08/2018 14:26

In that case, I'd just translate it as the pope's diving spot- literally where he can dive off into the lake!

Spudlet · 27/08/2018 14:28

Omg, a swan-diving pope is almost as good as a bouncing one Grin (I know that's not literally what is meant, but it's tickling me to imagine the pope in his speedos) Grin

One summer I lived in a villa just down the hill from Imself's summer residence. Just imagine, an old sinner like me having Imself
(or the previous Imself) as my neighbour . How posh is that?

Camomila · 27/08/2018 14:43

I asked my DM, she thinks its about an arena near Rome where they held the 60/70something olympics/other big sports competitions...including one called 'I quattro trampolini' basically the trampolino is a pulpit/raised bit for the medal ceromonies that he's also done open air mass from.

AviatorShades · 27/08/2018 14:54

You've nailed it, Camomila!

Spudlet · 27/08/2018 15:00

Ahaha! That makes sense, Camomila!

Although I am still holding out for a bouncy Pope Grin
