Does this look infected?

Cut myself whilst shaving a while ago, didn’t half take a chunk out!
Anyway it still hurts and feels a bit tight when I move my ankle. Started going red around it.

Dh reckons it’s infected but I’m not so sure. What do you think?

That must have hurt! It doesn't look infected.

brokenharbour · 27/08/2018 13:03

Nah that's healing nicely I reckon

RatRolyPoly · 27/08/2018 13:04

Ooh, ouch! I think we've all been there. Not infected though, I would say. Not angry enough, no oozing or weeping. Not a medical professional but extensive experience with flesh wounds. By all means ignore me if a professional tells you different, but I think you're okay.

I burnt myself recently then went on holiday so it couldn't heal properly as it was always wet . I had a massive red area around it but now it looks like yours and is fine . I trust my body to heal itself and recover and it's done exactly that .

kaytee87 · 27/08/2018 13:11

Looks fine. If it gets hot or starts weeping / oozing then get it looked at. Why does he think it's infected?

CakeNinja · 27/08/2018 13:11

It looks fine. Nasty, but fine!
It looks dry and like it’s healing neatly. If it were infected, the red area will spread, it would become inflamed and you may see red lines coming away from the scab.

I actually did a similar thing all the way down the front of my shin years ago, so so deep and the scar is still there!

skopu · 27/08/2018 13:16

Ouch bet that hurt! You'd expect a bit of rednes just with healing but it looks a bit excessive with the scab so yr dh has a point and i'd bathe it with warm salt water - either fill a washing up bowl with it for 20-25 min footbaths 3-4 times a day or soak gauze or even cotton wool and apply for same time as above.
Keep yr foot up as much as poss. And draw a line round redness to check if it's spreading, if so antibiotics might be needed.

Medihoney wound gel from h&barrett/amazon (£10) is a great antibac/antiseptic.

Cross-posted with cakeninja - who could well be right but salt water wouldn't do any harm juat in case. (Disclaimer - not medically trained!) All the best

Impulsesealer · 27/08/2018 14:06

Phew, glad it’s not infected!
Does feel very dry though. Do you think Vaseline would help?

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 27/08/2018 14:13

Vaseline will just trap in bacteria. I'd just leave it alone.

hendricksy · 27/08/2018 14:16

It needs to be dry to heal up so the top layer can drop off and new skin will grow underneath. I'm always fascinated at how well and quickly the human body heals .
