Would you be pissed off if I gave your child a gift above their age?

DD going to a party for 7 year old. She is middle child, eldest is 8 or 9, youngest 5 or 6. Theme of the party is multicolour. I'm guessing everyone will go for paints, craft, colouring pens etc and thought about getting one of those science kits.
E.g.
The coloured crystal growing ones, range between 8yrs and 10yrs.
There's an "investigate the rainbow one" but that's for 5 year olds.

I was looking for a chromatography type one, but didn't find that yet.

Would you be pissed off if your child received a present that a) the recommeded age is older than them and b) should possibly be done under supervision?

No because often these toys are labelled so above the age they can be used. The difference between 7-8 is nothing.

Sierra259 · 27/08/2018 10:09

No. A lot of those age recommendations are a bit on the high side anyway. If it really wasn't suitable, I'd just put it away until it was.

I'd buy it, sounds like a great present

An educational kit when child is 1 year under the recommended age I can't see the problem.

Someone bought DD an age 7+ make up kit for her 3rd birthday. I thought that was a bit inappropriate. and promptly charity shopped it

No not at all. Especially a child with older siblings I find tends to run at a slightly older age anyway because they copy everything. I know mine does.

BlairWaldorfsHeadband · 27/08/2018 10:14

No, you can often use them at earlier ages anyway! It’s not like it’s Call of Duty Grin

BuffyFairy · 27/08/2018 10:16

Not at all. My nearly 7 year old DD would love that, I was looking at those kits yesterday and thought it would make a great present for her.

1 year off recommended age really isn't a lot of difference and the parent could put it away for a short while if need be.

Tigertill716 · 27/08/2018 10:17

Sounds like a brilliant present, I would go for it.

FanWithoutAGuard · 27/08/2018 10:17

My 7 year old had one of those when he was 6 - it was all done under supervision, he took the 'gems' in to school to show everyone in the jar - they absolutely loved it.

And the supervision required is minimal - it's basically stir it all up and then wait a couple of days without touching, so I wouldn't be concerned at all.

This sounds fine.

An 18 film or game for a 5yo - no
A toy with tiny pieces of loose batteries for a baby - no
Educational 8yo toy for 7yo - yes
