How to research careers these days?

I'm in my late 30s and am thinking it's time for a change of direction; I've been self-employed for the last fourteen years. I'm not looking for specific career advice here, but which websites, magazines or books are good for listing careers, the requirements, the pros and cons of them, and which ones are suitable for starting at my age, because I actually have no idea what would suit me right now, just that I need a change. Can visiting an employment agency such as Reed be useful, or is that really old-fashioned now?

When I left school, the definitive list was "the Penguin Careers Guide", which listed everything above. But what is the best way now? I've tried a few websites, but I find many of them are more useful if you know which way you want to go. I also remember a magazine "jobs and careers weekly".
