This is mostly for the handful of fellow Yanks here.

We lost a great patriot and principled public servant today. We need more like him.

Godspeed John, and thank you for your service.

He was indeed a man of considerable integrity, bravery and heart.

There are so many examples of these things throughout his life, and I had so much respect for him, even though I didn't align with him politically.

I wish there were more like him. RIP Senator John McCain, you've earned your peace.

Not an American but was really sad to hear of his passing. I only came to know of him in the 2008 presidential election and at the time didn’t have an especially high opinion of him but over the years really came to admire him. I fear for where the Republican Party is heading without his guidance.

TheHulksPurplePanties · 27/08/2018 06:54

Not American myself, but I've always admired the man. He will be especially missed now when his voice of reason is so greatly needed in the Republican party. :(

Gosh, what a shame. I didn't agree with most of his politics, but thought him a man of integrity.

Dowser · 27/08/2018 10:54

He sounded a remarkably brave man.

Listened to a lovely obituary on BH yesterday on Radio 4, what a fabulous man he was and a real loss to political life.

He seemed very principled and generous of spirit.

Sad

He had a gift for being able to disagree with people while still treating them with great respect, like this incident when campaigning for the presidency against Barack Obama:

Woman Questions McCain about Obama's Citizenship

And likewise he never took offense when someone disagreed with him.

As chair of the Senate Armed Services Committee he kept that area an island of bipartisan support and worked tirelessly to support our men and women in uniform.

He was such a contrast to the current massive tosser, knob and poseur leadership. That's why they didn't get along, despite both being members of the same political party.

I agree with all the previous posters.

While watching all the news coverage here in the States, I found out that his mother is still alive. Roberta McCain is 106. To have to bear the grief of losing a child at such a great age is especially sad.
