How much should this joinery job cost?

We have just had new carpets fitted with much deeper underlay than the previous ones. The carpet fitters removed the doors and said to get a joiner to plane the bottom off them to fit. Hinges are all fine, it is just the planing that needs done. I have 5 doors to be planed.

Has anyone any idea of what sort of price this should be?

Bump, anyone who is or knows a joiner?

We paid £50 a door to have new ones hung. We are in Hertfordshire

No idea sorry when I had my floors laminated I had 1 door that had to be planned but the guy who fitted the floor did that for no extra but it was a 2 minute job . I wouldn’t even think you need a joiner just a handyman if your not great at diy as long as got a plane .

Thanks. I don't really want to pay £50 per door!

We have an electric plane, so we may have a go ourselves. The danger is we take too much off, or get it a bit wonky. How hard could it be?

I had said to the carpet fitter that we might do it ourselves, and he seemed very doubtful and said he thought we should go for a joiner.

I've never even heard of carpet fitters removing doors and leaving them off. Is this normal?

Check out a YouTube video or 2 first to get some guidance but I reckon you could so it yourself. I imagine 50£ per door would be to hang from beginning to end (hinges, latch, handle etc)

Carpet fitters wouldn't plane a door. I used to work for a flooring company. Our fitters would often do one door to be obliging, but preferred a joiner to do it. The one we recommended charged £10 per door to plane and rehang. Tbh that was almost 15 years ago though Blush

I think I paid about 25 quid to have one door planed. I imagine though it'll work out cheaper per door if you're having more than one done. I would reckon about £100.

Carpet fitters wouldn't plane a door.

I've had two separate carpet fitters who did - both charged £10 per door.

Scotinoz · 27/08/2018 20:19

We had carpet fitted last year, and the recommended 'door planing person' charged £15 per door.

Husband did it with an electric plane, and seemed to think it was a simple enough task (he's a good DIY man, although joinery work is not his strong point 😅)

AllStar14 · 27/08/2018 20:27

I did it myself. It was a mess and the door doesn't close properly now. No idea where I went wrong, but I'd pay someone else to do it!

Girlsnightin · 27/08/2018 21:13

We did it after someone said it was easy with a cheap little door plainer. Christ we sweated buckets doing 4 door. One has never hung right and one still drags the carpet as we have up. I'd happily pay 25 each for a proper job!!!

I thought I would update. We got a local builder to get his joiner to do it. £10 per door, which given the amount of work and angst it would have taken us to do it, seems like a really good price.
