West end - School of rock or Matilda?

Planning a London weekend for DS when he turns 8. He likely has HFA and is extremely gifted but struggles with school and the environment/people etc. Last year, he was medically signed off school on his birthday and the little birthday party he was going to have was cancelled as no one wanted to come and it was a horrible time for all of us. He was off school for months and is only just getting back to full time education (fingers crossed for next year...)

Anyway, I want to plan a really special weekend away for him that won't get meddled with regardless of what happens at school this year (birthday is just after half term). We've got a premier inn hotel with the breakfasts (he loves these!) and planned visits on emirates airline which he's asked for and a few meals in places he loves and we're going to the Harry Potter studios on our way home. But we'd really like to take him to his first ever theatre show.

Narrowed down to Matilda - he loves the book and it resonates as he is extremely gifted too, like the magic that one day he'll overcome the nasties with his powers! Or School of Rock -he plays drums and loves rock music.

Any recommendations for either or are they both great? Thanks in advance!

Not seen school of rock but seen Matilda twice, it’s absolutely amazing!

justmetwice · 26/08/2018 18:55

Seen both. Sor is great but Matilda is amazing. Would go for Matilda

CraftyYankee · 26/08/2018 18:57

Matilda is amazing, I'd vote for that every time.

StrugglingMumma · 26/08/2018 18:59

Highly recommend Matilda- amazing!

I've seen both and they're equally as great as each other, but different IYSWIM? If your DS finds big places overwhelming, the theatre is smaller for SOR (although I found sitting in the back of the stalls for Matilda made it feel quite small as you can't see anything above you).

School of Rock is very loud if that is an issue.

There are a lot of school of rock deals on at the moment - makes me wonder if they will be ending run soon.

Little bird had 30% off. O2 priority have half price top band tickets.

There is also the lottery for it - top price tickets for £15 each. Myself and a few others I know have got them first go but if its for a special occasion probably not worth the risk.

I’ve seen both and recommend Matilda without a doubt. It’s just brilliant 😊.

Your special treat sounds lovely, I hope you both enjoy it

I haven't seen SofR, but took teenage daughter to see Matilda and we both loved it.

We took the kids to see Matilda in July, and we all loved it.

Thanks all, great tips. Will look more to Matilda I think then.

Funnily enough, crowded spaces and loud noises aren't a problem. He's a sensory seeker and loves thrills, jolts and noise.

Another vote for Matilda! It is brilliant!

I've not seen Matilda but dd and I loved School of Rock, so don't discount it. If your ds likes noise and drums I think he'd love it.

Yes - Matilda

IncyWincyGrownUp · 26/08/2018 19:39

My 11 year old loves Matilda. We’ve seen it twice now and he’d go again tomorrrow if I had tickets. He has ASD and loves the compact nature of the Cambridge theatre. We’re planning to go see it again later in the year if we can. Sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty!

Whatever you go to see, have all the fun. :)

You've just missed an ASD friendly version of Harry Potter and the cursed child..we watched Thursday and Friday with OUR HF ASD boy and severe ASD BOY! was awesome!!!
