Which books do your primary-aged children love?

I’m starting a primary PGCE very shortly and we’ve been asked to start getting to know children’s books that are around at the moment. The recommended list is a bit dull.

I’d be really grateful if you were happy to share any books you’ve really loved reading with me. It would be helpful to know the rough age the book is best for.

I suspect this might lead to a bumper Waterstones visit next week...

I love Wonder Vanello!

A previous poster mentioned the Daisy books by Kes Gray, which are very popular. You may also, unfortunately, have to familiarise yourself with the Rainbow Fairies and Beast Quest series.

Free reader DD going into year 1 - the easier Roald Dahl, flat Stanley, rainbow fairy series, horrid Henry, Winnie the witch novels, abridged versions of Alice in Wonderland/secret garden/wind in the willows

I'm reading to her Mr Gum and Enid Blyton's Adventure series, and the full version of some of the above

The Worst Witch series - KS1 age
The Dick King-Smith “Sophie” series (KS1)
Harry Potter - KS2

The Liion Boy books are less well known, but a great adventure. (KS2)

Age 10 - Harry Potter and the Percy Jackson series (or anything by Rick Riordan.

When he was younger - Flat Stanley, the 'Claude' series of books, the Baby Aliens series by Pamela Buchart.

There was a book by Emma Caroll he read last year - something Lighthouse related. Definitely older primary school, but an interesting and thought provoking book about the war and Jewish refugees.

My son is 6, he has read everything by Roald Dahl and is currently half way though the How to Train your Dragon series. He has also enjoyed the Moomin books.
