Looking at renting or buying preferably on the West side. What areas to avoid? Schools not an issue, just travel to work which is on the western outskirts.

Hessle, cottingham etc all nice. Avoid estates. To be honest it’s been 10 years since I was house shopping there. Best advice is to physically drive around

Qooz · 26/08/2018 14:43

Yes we'll have a drive around but you can't beat local knowledge. Hessle looks nice.

As above West hull villages sounds your best bet. Hessle is nice and lots of shops and things to walk to. Some lovely houses in Willerby. What sort of budget are you looking at? Swanland, Kirkella and Ferriby are lovely but £££.

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 26/08/2018 14:53

What's your price range?

West Hull is nice as are the villages of Willerby, Anlaby, Hessle etc.

The further west you go the more expensive it becomes.

What are you looking for - busy bars and easy access to the city centre or something more rural and sedate?

PinkBuffalo · 26/08/2018 15:03

I have family willerby/Anlaby way. Very nice and the kids have all done well at the local schools.
Being close to the city as well has give them opportunities as well.
The local facilities are all pretty good.

I lived in Hessle and loved it. Lovely little town in easy reach of Hull and the A63. As a pp said, Swanland is nice but expensive. Dh and I were planning to move to North Ferriby which is also lovely. We wanted to be nearer a better secondary school but we would have stayed in Hessle if that wasn't a consideration. Ended up in Cardiff instead but that's another thread!

I'm currently staying at MIL house in Hull. She lives in Kirkella its a lovely village good schools. Also Willerby is nice Cottingham Swanland Ferriby Ellerton (outskirts). Sproatly Preston Eastwick. I love Hull theres so much to do up here. I'm from Essex and love coming up

fairiesandelves · 26/08/2018 15:15

MIL said avoid Orchard Park

fairiesandelves · 26/08/2018 15:16

Is Beverley too far as that's fabulous

Watto1 · 26/08/2018 15:17

God yes, definitely avoid Orchard Park!

supadupapupascupa · 26/08/2018 15:21

I would avoid the new builds on the south of hessle road. They flood. The ones not far from the old Birdseye site

DeadBod · 26/08/2018 15:24

As pp have said, the outer villages are all nice - Willerby, Cottingham, Hessle and Anlaby and a small car journey opens up options of Brough and South Cave. A bigger budget will mean Swanland, Kirkella and Westella.
It really depends on how much you want to spend.

Qooz · 26/08/2018 15:37

It's for DC who has a job up there and enough of a deposit to buy a first time buyer home. DC wants to be in Hull rather than village.

That's useful because you'd never know that from looking.

I know the area a bit but not enough. Love Beverley and South Cave and Kirkella but too £££ for DC.

As it's for DC , can I suggest The Avenues area of Hull? I lived there when I first moved to hull. It's nice and a bit students! It's not Smith and Nephew by any chance is it? I worked there for a while as a graduate.

Watto1 · 26/08/2018 15:42

Studenty I meant.

Geekster1963 · 26/08/2018 15:44

Avoid Orchard park and Bransholme. I lived in Hull over 18 years ago now. I lived in the Avenues with a friend for a bit then rented a flat about a ten minute walk from Hull Royal Infirmary where I worked at the time. The area was okay, though sometimes walked past prostitutes on the crossroads on the way home.

whooz · 26/08/2018 15:49

Watto1 They know the area around the uni as have visited friends there, I will suggest looking at the Avenues although it's might be too near centre.

grafittiartist · 26/08/2018 15:53

The Avenues and Dukeries are nice, lots going on, and its possible to walk to town from them. Victoria Dock is nice too- good views . Some of the areas around the university and Beverley road are good if you pick carefully. Beverley road gets heavy traffic though. Garden village always looks pretty, but i dont know it well. oh- Bricknell is a bit far out, but very family orientated.

Asdf12345 · 26/08/2018 15:53

I liked cottingham very much when doing the same. Would have liked Anlaby just as much I suspect.
Beverley is nice also but a further commute.

supadupapupascupa · 26/08/2018 16:01

Avoid Coltman St area. I lived in the road. Really rough. Never felt safe

supadupapupascupa · 26/08/2018 16:02

Road behind it should have said. Some beautiful houses but always trouble

grafittiartist · 26/08/2018 16:18

West- Wold road and surrounding streets are good. Bus routes, near a good leisure centre. Reasonable prices.

Qooz · 27/08/2018 10:33

Thanks folks I have a good list here.
