People who know Alderney well!

I have been tasked with sorting out a family trip to Alderney for May next year. 4 adults, 2 children. We all get along, and so we would look for a self catering place to share. I have never been to Alderney and not that great at research, so I'd love some suggestions and ideas from MNetters who undoubtedly know more than I do!

We'd be flying over - could possibly hire a car. I'd love ideas about day trips and places to stay etc.

I am most grateful for any advice!

I love Alderney. But I haven't been there for donkey's years now - used to go when I was in my late teens and early twenties, so a long time ago!

You might not need to hire a car (although there is a car hire firm there). The island is only 3 miles X 1.5 miles, so it is all walkable or you could hire bikes (bike hire also available) - assuming no mobility problems.

There are some lovely, sandy beaches - hopefully the weather will be good in May. And you can take boat trips around the island too.

There are plenty of things to see and do as well - I'm afraid that I didn't cover many of them during my visits though Blush

Unfortunately, I can't help you with places to stay because all my knowledge is very out of date - and we never stayed self-catering. I would say that in/near the main town, St Anne, might be your best bet for being walking distance to the main shops, restaurants, bars etc. Or Newtown/Braye area.

It's a lovely island - have a great holiday Envy Grin

Thank you so much. :) I realised after writing that it is quite small so a car would probably not be required!!!

I am very much looking forward to it. We don't holiday anywhere very often so it is a big treat!

I had my best childhood holidays in Alderney. Went back 10 years ago and it was just lovely. Such a pretty, happy, friendly place. The most laid back holiday you can have. Not masses to do in terms of trips. However lots of walking, beautiful beaches, museum, boat trips. Lovely places to eat. Just heaven. Book early as it gets full early. We self catered. Can't remember the name of the place but was at the top of the town.

fatbottomgirl67, did you used to fly on the Aurigny Islanders or Trislanders? They were huge fun. Not sure what aircraft they're using now but, after all, they could hardly expand that airport?!?!

CeeCeeAndAida · 27/08/2018 13:38

Ah, it's just occurred to me that they must use STOL aircraft - like at London City airport?

fatbottomgirl67 · 27/08/2018 21:01

Ceecee they still use the tri landers. Hilarious when the windows rattle all the way down the runway. Amazing way to arrive and the views and fab. Not sure if u can fly from city runway is still tiny

Ah, I didn't mean flying to Alderney from London City - all I meant was that I wonder if Aurigny have some STOL aircraft in their fleet now? London City has a V small runway too, so can only take STOL (as far as I know).
