hi my lb is 5 and smallish for age. I'm asking as recently he's been waking very early sayings he's hungry but also asking for more food after breakfast so I'm not sure if I'm giving him enough for breakfast. This morning he had 2 slices of brown toast it was thick bloomer bread- he doesn't really like anything on it like but butters ECT which I know would be more filling. A large Apple not a child's sized , 2 slices of smoked cheese. Then he was saying he was hungry half a hour later. I'm going to make pancakes with oats and fruit for tomorrow as they are pretty filling but just wondered if I'm not offering enough at breakfast. He likes eggs but often has at lunch time, he doesn't like porridge.

Mine (5 and 7) have either weetabix, porridge, shreddies or muesli. Fresh berries if we have then or dried fruit if not. A small glass of fresh juice.

CatsRule · 26/08/2018 13:09

My 6 year old has cereal or toast mid week and toast, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes at the weekend. He scoffs the lot and needs something else soon after! He has hollow legs at the moment. He does eat more than me and sometimes more than DH! I find d whenever I can't fill him, he takes a growth spurt soon after.

Mumshotel · 26/08/2018 13:17

My nearly 4 year old has 2 weetabix and a banana. He never sits still and is constantly hungry

Eggs, either scrambled, poached or boiled.
Toast
Yogurt
Banana

However he will only have a tiny lunch and not even that sometimes. He does eat dinner .

BitchQueen90 · 26/08/2018 13:34

Porridge, shreddies or weetabix with full fat milk and some fruit.

Dorfl · 26/08/2018 13:44

My dd likes to have tuna or ham sandwiches for breakfast, or boiled egg on toast, sometimes omelette with bacon and mushrooms, bacon sandwich, fruit and yoghurt with oats.

I like to try and make sure she has some protein for her breakfast as she is constantly starving otherwise!

MakeUpGirl · 26/08/2018 13:54

My 4 year old has weetabix or shreddies, fruit and yoghurt when she first gets up. Then about an hour later has a slice of toast with peanut butter. She always has a mid morning snack of vegetable sticks too
She never sits still and seems to need to eat little and often to keep her going

Babybearsporij · 26/08/2018 17:11

My DC have always been cereal people. Weetabix, 1 or 2 depending on their hunger levels, shreddies or rice crispies.

DC1 doesn't usually ask for anything else, but DC2 seems to eat breakfast, graze all morning, then isn't really interested after lunch.

CherryChatsworth · 26/08/2018 17:21

Mine is older at 11 but I've given him a chicken/cheese or ham toasted bagel, handful of mixed nuts and a chopped up apple for years now. Keeps him going

Chocolala · 26/08/2018 19:42

Two of (varies daily):

Aldi croissant with Nutella spread
Small bowl of Cheerios
Fruit flavour yoghurt
Pain au Raisin
Piece of fruit

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/08/2018 19:48

My 5 yr old has 2 weetabix (or porridge) with banana. Followed by either toast, yogurt or another piece of fruit.

HollySwift · 26/08/2018 19:56

DS (6) likes porridge with fruit or toast.
DD (4) like porridge too, but plain.

Weekends they have pancakes/muffins/boiled eggs.

Crunchymum · 26/08/2018 19:57

My fussy 5yo eats

  • shreddies (dry with milk in a cup)
  • weetabix (with milk)
  • breadsticks and cheese

He eats porridge but not mine and he will have a bagel at school [they hand them out in the playground for all the kids]

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 26/08/2018 19:57

Wheetos
Croissants
Toast
Scrambled egg
Dippy eggs and soldiers
Porridge
Bagel
Yoghurt
Crumpets
Bacon
Cereal bar

AtleastitsnotMonday · 26/08/2018 19:59

I agree with those suggesting upping the protein, bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese, beans on toast both quick to make.

runbeerrunbeer · 26/08/2018 20:58

Bit older but a child that's famished one day, could live off an apple the next...Depends if weekend or school day... faves are: Sausage sandwich on brown bread x2, prob eat 3/4. Bowl of shreddies with milk, 1/4 banana ish and strawberries/blueberries. Raisin and cinnamon bagel toasted with butter. 2 slices brown toast with cheese spread or jam. 1 toast and 1-2 hard boiled eggs.

runbeerrunbeer · 26/08/2018 20:58

And beans on 1 toast!

CakeNinja · 26/08/2018 21:02

Ds (6) usually has either a bacon sandwich,
Smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel, boiled egg and soldiers or crumpets.
Followed by a plate of fruit - blueberries/raspberries/mango/banana.

If we’re not doing much, he grazes throughout the day but if we are busy he eats less.

HeyMicky · 26/08/2018 21:07

DD1 is nearly 6. On school days she has Greek yoghurt, a piece of fruit and a small glass of partly diluted fruit juice at home, then a bowl of cereal at breakfast club.

On the weekends she has cereal, fruit and diluted fruit juice plus toast and protein - beans, cheese, eggs or peanut butter. Occasionally pancakes or french toast if I make them.

LifeHackQueens · 26/08/2018 21:15

Porridge made with milk and a sprinkling of cinnamon, 2 slices of toast with either butter or marmalade, a banana and a cup of milk. Sometimes it is followed by wheatabix with milk if still hungry.

fizzytonicplease · 26/08/2018 23:18

My nearly 4yr old will have some dry cheerios as soon as he wakes up and while i get a cup of tea made for me. His actual breakfast is normally porridge with cinnamon and honey followed by some grapes and blueberries, or ceral normally 2 weetabix, followed by one slice of marmite on toast or apple and banana sliced with cinnamon on top. Some days at the weekend he will have fruit when he wakes and then have egg and mushrooms on toast, or homemade pancakes (normally got a batch in the freezer for quickness) with greek yoghurt honey and blueberries/strawberries.

He does tend to eat a lot in the morning but then only has a very small lunch and no snack between breakfast and lunch.

Sleephead1 · 27/08/2018 07:39

Thanks everyone I think I will give more protein like eggs or beans he likes eggs on every form. O sometimes do eggy bread for breakfast and he loves that. I've made pancakes with oats bran, oats, banana and berries so see if they keep him fuller for a bit longer. He's starting school next week I think il need to give him breakfast early then a second breakfast to keep him going as he likes to eat every few hours. I think il just be slightly more organised for breakfast and give more filling options

Mine like a wrap filled with grated cheese and scrambled egg.

Tisfortired · 27/08/2018 07:55

That sounds about the same as mine, who is 5 in October. A standard day for him is

At home (weekends etc) he'll have a banana, a yoghurt and porridge with whatever fruit we have in (strawberries or blueberries usually)

On a nursery day he'll have a banana and a yoghurt at home, and when he gets to nursery he'll have brown toast and an apple.

If he's hungry mid morning he will usually have a brioche.
