Leaving vegetarianism...

I've been a vegetarian for nearly 20 years.

Over the past few months, I've been really craving meat.

I wouldn't suddenly become an avid meateater but have been considering introducing a small amount of good quality, higher welfare meat to my diet on occasion - perhaps once or twice fortnightly.

Has anyone else done this?

i did when it was a hassle to cook for me, ds and dh.
i still prefer veg food.
do you cook meat for others?

GreenPimpernel · 26/08/2018 11:04

Not me personally I'm more likely to move the other way into veganism but I know several people who have. I don't think it's particularly unusual.

No, but take it easy reintroducing your body to meat.

I was a strict veggie for 11 years but have been eating fish twice a week during my current pregnancy. I've always craved fish (I was veggie for ethical reasons, but always really loved the taste of meat and fish!) and I felt it would be a good way of getting some healthy protein in my diet at such a critical time for my body. Also, my toddler and DH are omnivores so it makes life easier to occasionally cook meals everyone can eat! I'm persevering with pescatarianism whilst preggers but to be honest, I've hated it. I don't like preparing fish (weird, because I was never previously squeamish), the taste isn't half as good as I recall (rose-tinted glasses!), and I feel guilty as hell for giving up my golden record of pure vegetarianism. I haven't even told anyone apart from DH. I'll go back to veggie very soon and will pursue my dream of veganism once the dust has settled following baby's arrival.

I did after 25 years. I was initially veggie for ethical reasons but then realised I was just veggie out of habit. Took a while to get used to eating meat - still not too keen on fish but buy ethically - we still eat vegan several times a week.

@Isentthesignal

I think that's where I am tbh.

I can't see me eating it often because I like veggie food.

I don't cook it at home and haven't done since I started. I only occasionally cook it for the children - maybe once or twice a year.

I can't quite bring myself to go vegan and I think if I'm not going to give up eggs and dairy...

Really it's entirely up to you what you choose to put into your body and the reasons why are nobody else's business so don't feel you need to explain yourself or convince anyone! Iv found that some people can be hugely judgmental especially to people who go back to meat or fish almost like you've lied to them about who you are or something! That no your problem though!

I would try it once or twice a week to start out with and see how your body gets on with it and if it's as enjoyable as you were hoping. Think of a couple/ few meals you really fancy and try to make the highest welfare version you can (if that matters to you)

I don't eat meat but thats because the texture makes me want to want to vomit Blush family do eat meat so I/we try to buy best animal welfare products I can afford but at least try to stick to things like uk pork etc

I've been vegetarian for 38 years now , for ethical reasons and TBH , I wasn't much of meat eater anyway.

If I did ever change my mind , I'd try fish (though I wasn't much of a fish eater either Grin ) , I missed tinned pink salmon .

Your stomach will need to adjust though so go cautious .
