How do I know if I am feeding my child too much/not enough?

This post probably makes me sound really stupid but I had an eating disorder as a child and young adult (now in recovery) and this area causes me some anxiety. I’m desperate not to pass on this anxiety to my child, and I know the easiest answer is to just not stress about it (I am really trying not to) but some reassurance and advice would help. My child has just turned one and below is what he would trypically eat in a day, does this sound ok?

Breakfast: 2 weetabix with milk and some fruit
Snack: rice cakes or biscuit
Lunch: scrambled eggs with spinach, toast soldiers, yoghurt
Dinner: fish, broccoli, peas and mashed potatoes. A banana or fruit pot for dessert

Sounds lovely to me. As you are avoiding snacking and sweets then the only thing you need to watch is portion control.

Are they still having any milk? As a drink, not just on cereal.

Looks absolutely fine to me!

I’ve got 3 dc under 3 and they would have the following in a day

Breakfast; porridge/weetabix/pancake or omelette
Lunch: sandwich/omelette or cheese scone & a yoghurt plus fruit or veg sticks
Snack: a biscuit or rice cake (only if they asks for it)
Dinner a child’s portion of whatever is being cooked that night and then a jelly pot or portion of fruit

It all sounds fine. I also had an eating disorder, and found talking to my health visitor about my children’s food really helpful.

His diet sounds perfect. There's a really good website for advice on diet for children under 5. Google little people's plates.

Thank you for all the reassurance, it’s good to hear that I’m getting things right when it comes to his diet. He loves his food and will try pretty much anything which I’m really happy about. I did speak to my health visitor about it when he had his 12 month check, but she just said not to worry. I didn’t mention my own history though, maybe I should have.

Singingtherapy thanks for the website recommendation, I’ve had a look and the portion sizes are pretty similar to what I give him so that’s good to know Smile

SockQueen yes he still has milk as well. 2-3 times a day, about 5oz each time.
