Travelling between stations in Birmingham today

Hi. Quick question. Is it reasonably straightforward to walk from Birmingham New Street to Moor Street station? We are 2 adults & 2 DCs (11 & 7) plus we each have a wheely suitcase and a backpack. And how long is it likely to take - allowing for whingey DCs who are already tired from late flight last night. Alternative is taxi from Birmingham airport to Solihull station but no idea how far that is and how much it might cost. We are travelling to London btw and Euston has been closed so we have to go to Marylebone instead. Thanks!

Literally 5 mins Op

Ramps and lifts

Easy

SellFridges · 26/08/2018 08:54

It’s a five minute walk. Clearly sign posted. You’ll be grand.

Millybingbong · 26/08/2018 08:55

Taxi to solihull would also be simple and would save time if you have all had enough

SellFridges · 26/08/2018 08:55

That said, a taxi to Solihull from the airport would not be too much - it’s only a few miles.

MsJaneAusten · 26/08/2018 08:56

It’s a short, well signposted route. You’re also under cover for most of it. It’ll take ten minutes max. Don’t worry about it.

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 26/08/2018 08:57

Brilliant thanks! Is any of it undercover? We left uk in a heatwave and returned in cold and rain and none of us have coats...

Pretty straightforward and signposted as far as I remember. The Euston thing is a pain isn’t it?

All of it can be

candlefloozy · 26/08/2018 08:58

Some of it is yes. The only other under cover way you could do it is by leaving moor street station and walking through the bullring to the opposite end and heading to grand central. You'd hardly get wet at all but might add on another five mins?

MarthasGinYard · 26/08/2018 08:59

Just use bullring and pop out other end

Caspiana · 26/08/2018 09:01

Are you flying into Birmingham airport? Are you then intending to get a train from International to New St and then walk to Moor St? I would get the cab to Solihull.

If I remember correctly, to get to International Station you have to get the monorail. Then get on the train to New St, then walk over to Moor St, all of which is out of your way anyway as you’re heading north only to head south again. It is perfectly doable but a bit of a faff given the airport is not all that far from Solihull anyway.

The train you board at Moor st will pass through Solihull.

Caspiana · 26/08/2018 09:03

Another option if you’re worried about the weather is there is a tram from outside New st to snow hill (which is on the same line), or you could take the indoor route through the bull ring and would then only have to cross over a road.

The normal way has quite a lot of cover but it isn’t totally indoors.

Hope you had a lovely holiday!

Thanks everyone. Euston thing is def a pain. We always use Birmingham airport, way nicer than London ones, but were not expecting the train shenanigans. Think we will do the walk and save the taxi fare for the London end!

I makes no sense to get train from airport to new street then moor street, as the airport is closer to Solihull than it is central Birmingham, much easier to get a cab or an Uber!

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 26/08/2018 09:16

Bichonbaby - that's what we thought too but bit worried trains will be very crowded because of euston closure and may be less likely to get a seat if we dont get on at starting point.

If it’s raining go into the main concourse at new street - take the lift or escalator up to the grand central shops (lift is very out of the way though near the tram exit). Walk past John Lewis and a big costa to link street keep ahead past irregular choice until you see Debenhams. Turn left past Debenhams follow it around to the lifts - you want the ground floor of shops - walk as far as you can until you see Selfridges. Exit the bullring on the left by the toilets - you will see Moor Street station straight ahead.

everygalaxy · 26/08/2018 09:21

If dry exit new street at the Front (this is the same direction as the A platforms) towards bullring - by Oliver Bonas, All Bar one etc Walk towards boots, cross the road and walk under the bridge - you will see Moor Street as soon as you exit the bridge.

sproutsandparsnips · 26/08/2018 09:33

Definitely get cab to Solihull from airport. Or get bus to Solihull station from Birmingham International Station.

NeverPromisedYouARoseGarden · 26/08/2018 13:06

Everygalaxy - Thank you! We followed your excellent directions and kept dry. Would never have found our way otherwise. DCs loved the shops and wanted to stay. Train is v busy so glad we didnt go to Solihull after all. And thanks also to everyone else who replied.

Great! Glad they helped. Directions in central brum can only be given via shops!! It’s easy once you know where you are going! Grand central has some fun shops & a nice food court. Come back to Birmingham for a day out when the trains are running a little smoother!!
