Best place to live in the UK

I really want to move and make a fresh start. Where in the UK should I move to? I have very few ties and genuinely want to do this.

Dorchester
Sherborne
Bridport

Don't you have to work? Anywhere can be hell if you have to spend all your time commuting or end up with dull work life.

FurryDice · 26/08/2018 19:00

Well I’m not just upping sticks immediately before looking into job prospects etc! This is just a thread to ask mumsnetters where they think are good places to live.

Inverness

Truckingonandon · 26/08/2018 19:18

It matters greatly though if you have to work or whether you can afford not to.

cptartapp · 26/08/2018 19:19

Sarah Beeney said South Ribble in Lancashire and I love it here.
Half an hour to the coast max, an hour to the Lakes and Liverpool/Manchester. Plenty of green spaces, affordable housing, fantastic schools....

lljkk · 26/08/2018 19:20

A lot of people where i live commute 1-2 hours each way b/c there are not suitable local jobs for their career/background. People from London often move here planning to daily commute that much.

lljkk · 26/08/2018 19:21

... that much commuting would = lousy quality of life for me. No matter how pretty or nice the home address was otherwise.

supadupapupascupa · 26/08/2018 19:21

I can’t recommend Lincolnshire highly enough. Great standard of living, couple of hours to London, beautiful countryside, glorious coastline, very affordable housing. And have you been to Lincoln? Gorgeous. East Midlands all the way

MumUndone · 26/08/2018 19:25

Where Ivy, where??

pinkandbluestripes · 26/08/2018 19:27

Northern Ireland. Relatively low house prices and crime. Good free schools. Free prescriptions.

Always within at least driving distance of spectacular scenery.

Thomlin · 26/08/2018 19:30

What about the borders? Lots of small market towns, cheap house prices and many places commutable to Edinburgh.

For example Kelso

Or if you have a bigger budget and would like smaller than a town, Gordon, 10mins from Kelso and 40mins from Edinburgh.

GreyGardens88 · 26/08/2018 19:35

North Yorkshire

SnackSnackEatAndCrave · 26/08/2018 19:37

I grew up near Norwich and it's bloody lovely! As a PP said, miles from anywhere on shit roads, but the city is great, and the coast, just down the road really, is to die for.
I'd go back if DPs job wasn't travel based.

MollyHuaCha · 26/08/2018 19:39

What's your budget and what do you need - house/apartment, garden, how many bedrooms, near rail station etc. ?

SnackSnackEatAndCrave · 26/08/2018 19:39

Also yes to Yorkshire. York is beautiful but pricey, so not very different to Cambridge... But there are smaller towns like mini Yorks, and the house prices are surprisingly reasonable!

Immigrantsong · 26/08/2018 19:39

I don't agree about West Yorkshire. It's a horrendous place to live. The only naice areas are Ilkley and Skipton and Leeds City centre. The rest absolutely sucks balls. Locals are not friendly at all. Avoid.

Solasshole · 26/08/2018 19:43

If I could chose I'd live in Wales Grin but that's because I like countryside and sheep and animals and so on and so forth

beltanelove · 26/08/2018 19:45

The ribble valley in Lancashire or Lancaster area

GenderApostate · 26/08/2018 19:45

North Staffordshire/Cheshire.
Easy transport links, affordable houses. i.e 3 bedroom semi with drive and garden for under £150k. Some excellent schools.
I can be in Wales / Manchester / Birmingham / Derby / Peak district within an hour. London is 1.5 hours on the train from Stoke or Crewe. Lake district and Yorkshire within 2 hours drive.

LaDaronne · 26/08/2018 19:47

norwich is lovely. Move there.

ParkheadParadise · 26/08/2018 19:49

Glasgow 👍

Theworldisfullofgs · 26/08/2018 19:50

I'm north Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire border. Really like it and go to Cambridge or peterborough for shopping.
Cambridge itself is nice for visit but don't think I could live there.

nothingchangesagain · 26/08/2018 19:50

I live in the best place in the UK. only I can't tell you where it is because I don't want more people to live here! Grin

ivykaty44 · 26/08/2018 19:56
