What job would I be good at?

So I’m a bit stuck with what to do next in terms of jobs. I work for an MP at the moment, so do research projects, comms and PR work, social media media management, writing articles, write lots of correspondence, lots of organisation and horizon scanning politically.

I like the breadth of what I do, often no two days are the same and I get to look at lots of different issues each day which I enjoy. I also like feeling as though I make a difference to people, even if in some small way.

I also like the political strategising in my job (though not necessarily the party politics) and I’m good at it. I’m particularly interested in topics like mental health provision, violence against women, social mobility...not so great on detailed economics, DWP, and anything involving maths.....Blush

I’m good at anything requiring attention to detail but also good at the horizon scanning and forseeing problems, particularly PR related. I’m very organised. I also enjoy editing things - could I be a editor? I’ve always loved the idea but know it’s very competitive. Work for a charity? I could work for a PR agency but I’m not particularly commericially minded and not that motivated by money. I’d be interested in the civil service but not sure if I’d find it too dry (no offence meant, sorry!)

If anything springs to mind to anyone or if anyone does anything combining any of these things, I’d be really really grateful if you could share! I want to do something worthwhile and enjoy it - I just don’t know what. Currently based in London and earning just over 30k. I’d like to work in a team rather than solo, as I do at the moment. Arghhhhhh. Thank you! Smile

Hmm see I’m not sure I’d be that interested in doing that Blush I want more strategising and a bit more excitement but just don’t know what job that would be...

@Pinkandproud Journalism is fairly exciting whatever the topic - the pressure of deadlines and scoops is always there, and when you're at smaller pubs the competition is much fiercer

My charity job was a bit of a pisstake, I found that pretty boring & didn't apply myself

But these are fairly down-turning times in the media so most people who want to get into it make do. And subs are always going to be needed because computers can do some of their work but a human always needs to add the finishing touches & make sure there aren't typos on the front page or rude statements accidentally published

And there are plenty of people who are good at this. If you're working in media for the police or a big charity or whatever, your phone is constantly ringing off the hook and you are always under pressure to put out scandals and fires and stay on top being in the news but in a positive way

There are actual political party strategists. I don't know what they do, either, but it's a profession. Lobbyists. You sound like someone who would be good in PR or maybe marketing.

Comms/lobbying for a charity? Or researcher for factual/documentary TV? That would be freelance though and his are long and job security shit. But each new programme is a new topic/challenge. You'd maybe catch a break if the programme was political...

I was thinking about this this morning & would suggest PR firms and political consultancies - they can be small or even big international types.

Lobbying (like David Laws' husband) is definitely a big field that will wear you out with excitement!

Less thrilling but also useful would be think tanks and aligning yourself with particular causes or a side of politics. I'd bloody love to work for Momentum but don't really have political experience
