Is OP on the wind up?

A poster has specifically said our country is called this, and OP decides to call it something else.

Im born and bred in London and I can see that's out of order.

Mrbatmun · 25/08/2018 11:03

I'll get looking for ATM before I head off to the wild west, and fairly ATM lite, of Eire

Are you joking? 😂 You are in Ireland not the Amazon rainforest!

HoosierDaddy · 25/08/2018 11:03

See, referring to the South doesn't bother me... but don't start play-acting that you are about to enter The Field. Of course there are bloody ATMS.

Mrbatmun · 25/08/2018 11:05

Maybe the OP was surprised she would even need Euros as she assumed before she went that she would be paying for stuff with grain and potatoes.

wowfudge · 25/08/2018 11:11

We have family in rural Cork and they are a twenty minute drive from the nearest town, but that town has 3 ATMs so it's hardly the end of the earth. Paying by card in places is just as commonplace as here in England.

To be fair to the OP she was probably trying to be sensitive, but got it wrong calling it s.Ireland.

JennyHolzersGhost · 25/08/2018 11:14

Or maybe she thought Ireland uses the pound! Plenty of British people do. Confused

pachiano1 · 25/08/2018 11:18

mr of course she was joking

jenny OP states euros were left at home in error.

OP, I would withdraw a fairly large amount to minimise charges, although do check with your bank bc not all banks charge and not all banks charge a lot.

Mrbatmun · 25/08/2018 11:20

mr of course she was joking

Well given she went to the effort of starting a thread asking how she was going to obtain cash in Ireland, I'm not so sure!

worridmum · 25/08/2018 11:20

Lets call the Rest of the UK south Scotland because thats what the OP is doing.

FesteringCarbuncle · 25/08/2018 11:21

My father is from Dublin and he calls his country the south
It doesn't piss everyone off

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 25/08/2018 11:22

What bank are you with? My Santander credit card has no fees abroad. ATM fees aren’t that bad, take out the max you can though as that’ll reduce the fees.

Mrbatmun · 25/08/2018 11:30

I have literally never heard an Irish person call it Southern Ireland or The South (apart from someone in 'The North' referring to Geographically going South iyswim). And I know a lot of Irish people!

pachiano1 · 25/08/2018 11:30

Well given she went to the effort of starting a thread asking how she was going to obtain cash in Ireland, I'm not so sure!

She did not actually start a thread asking that though. The question was not how to obtain cash in Ireland, it was what is the best way to get cash in Ireland, what is the cheapest and easiest way using either debit or credit card.

JaneJeffer · 25/08/2018 11:35

This might help if you can't find an ATM Wink

JaneJeffer · 25/08/2018 11:36
oops forgot link
LifeHackQueens · 25/08/2018 11:43

I heard if you charge your credit card choosing the currency of the country (euro amount) you are in, it is cheaper than paying sterling amount calcuated by business. Can you ring your cc helpline and ask advice?
The Post Office offer 0% commission on sterling. They're open until 1pm today. Closed on Sundays.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 25/08/2018 11:45

She's been very lucky to get any internet to start this thread down there in s.Ireland.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 25/08/2018 11:49

@mrbatmum people from “the north” talk about going on holidays “down south” even when they’re going to donegal, which is usually further north than they are! (Source: am from “the north).

HoosierDaddy · 25/08/2018 11:53

A lot of people from the Republic call it the South too. I understand that some people don't like it, and why, but it is still used fairly commonly.

The idea that we live in some sort of 1980s time warp is (to me, personally) more annoying!

LifeHackQueens · 25/08/2018 11:55

Ok the op made a mistake about S. Ireland (It is Republic of Ireland) but she is in a bind so it's not helpful to start a political debate.

Stressedoverkids · 25/08/2018 11:56

I'll get looking for ATM before I head off to the wild west, and fairly ATM lite, of Eire

Ignoring the Eire bit The West is much better for ATM's than it was even a few years ago.

ElspethFlashman · 25/08/2018 11:57

Well OP, if I see some eejit wittering on about Aaaaay Rahhh and weakly waving a Lloyd's bank card in the general direction of everyone who passes, I'll say hello.

LifeHackQueens · 25/08/2018 11:57

Op try doing another thread on the Craicsnet Board.

Mrbatmun · 25/08/2018 12:04

Ok the op made a mistake about S. Ireland (It is Republic of Ireland) but she is in a bind so it's not helpful to start a political debate.

Hardly a 'bind'. Find ATM, put card in, boom, got some Euros.

EleanorRigbey · 25/08/2018 12:05

Not trying to derail the thread it Sky news reported that the Pope had arrived in England this morning Hmm Confused

www.google.ie/amp/s/www.joe.ie/amp/news/sky-news-accidentally-report-pope-francis-arrived-england-638006

OP just use your ATM card.
