Out of date tins. Would you use?

Ok. I’m making a dish which requires tinned chilli con carne, amongst other things.

I knew I had some already in the cupboard, so didn’t get any. I’ve just dug them out and the BBE date is Nov 2016!

As the tins are perfectly fine and been in my pantry (seemingly) for years ... would I be OK to use them? Or will I kill us all?

Thanks!

but open it and judge

They’ll be safe to eat but might not taste as good.

Unforgotten · 25/08/2018 08:58

Oh. Perhaps I need to forget that idea then (or pop to the shops...). Gah!

open it and let us know

2 years out of date for a tin is absolutely nothing. I've eaten tinned stuff maybe 8 years out of date and the only thing wrong is that the solid bits sink to the bottom, but a quick stir sorts that out.

AviatorShades · 25/08/2018 09:30

As long as it's not dented or blown, then yes I would. And I can't even remember when I last checked tin dates.

MuttsNutts · 25/08/2018 09:32

Am I the only one wondering WTF recipe calls for tinned chilli con carne!?

pachiano1 · 25/08/2018 09:40

I'm not sure which is more disgusting tbh. Tinned chilli con carne or 2 years out of date food.

Just go to the shop?

Unforgotten · 25/08/2018 09:40

Thanks all. Our local shop stocks it (who knew!), so I will use the old tins another time...

MuttsNuts Grin. It’s a Pampered Chef recipe (those special bakeware you used to be able to get, although I don’t own any of it and use regular pots and pans). It’s a chilli cheese dip recipe. The list of ingredients makes me want to gag (tinned chilli, cream cheese, curry powder), but it does taste nice!

Pachiano - I am absolutely usually with you re tinned chilli (which is why it’s so out of date I guess as I don’t really use it!). But this dip is lovely!

Sounds lovely Grin

smurfy2015 · 25/08/2018 21:59

As long as the tin hasn't been dented/bruised in any way, date is only a date in my experience that manufacturers have to add and if people miss the date, they might throw good food and to replace it next time they want to get it for a recipe, Eg I have just checked a tin from my cupboard and have a tin of Toast toppers from May 16, which is fine as full of preservatives anyhow

So definitely would use

Lweji · 25/08/2018 22:01

Definitely use it.
Serve it to OH. Wait 24 h. Eat it and serve it to the children if he/she survives.
Wink

StylishMummy · 25/08/2018 22:01

As long as the tin isn't rusted and the contents smell fine, go for it!

PestymcPestFace · 25/08/2018 22:01

Most tins will out live there sell by date by a good couple of decades.
