Sleep pillow sprays

Has anyone got experience of using one of those sleep aid pillow sprays? My first instinct is they are a bit of a gimmick and wouldn’t help with sleep issues. It’s for my partner, he wants to avoid sleeping tablets but is having trouble getting to sleep, he is ok once dropped off.

Any recommendations?

Pillow sprays didn't work for me. Magnesium supplements an hour before bedtime did.
Floradix Magnesium is good but expensive.
Currently using Aava High Absorption Magnesium Citrate and that's good too.

Have a google of magnesium deficiency and sleep, anxiety, mood etc. Is really interesting.

The tensing and relaxing muscles is called Jacobsen's Progressive Relaxation Technique in it's full name. If you do the whole thing, you often feel like going to sleep.

Otherwise if your DH does bits and pieces to help him go to sleep but not all of it, all the time, he might benefit from sleep hygiene. The key to this is you need to do all of it, all of the time for it to help.

The This Works one is good - does the job and smells lovely too.

I second the magnesium deficiency. I was recommended Better You Magnesium Oil spray by a nurse and find it really helpful. The magnesium is absorbed through the skin and works within an hour...just a word of warning though, don't get it in any cuts or abrasions as it really stings!! I buy it from Amazon as find it cheaper than elsewear.

Has anyone tried that thing that projects a pulsing light onto your ceiling to regulate your breathing? It's supposed to help you go to sleep quicker but I'm not convinced it's not just a gimmick.

My great aunt gave me one once, could never remember what it was, but it really worked. Thinking Avon could be it actually.
Will be having a look in the shops next time I'm out.

Get a fan in the bedroom, acts like white noise. My husband uses it to drown out the noises of the house and children - he works odd hours.

What does the magnesium spray do?

MulticolourMophead · 25/08/2018 20:24

I bought some to try, haven't used it yet. I do use sleepmasks, and recently got some from Amazon that had a well shaped nosepiece that really helped to block light out.

And yes, a routine helps.

This breathing exercise really works. Tongue on the ridge behind your front teeth. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of seven, breath out through your mouth making a quiet whoosing sound for a count of eight. It's very relaxing. Better to do it four times then break for a minute or two when you first start or it can make you feel a bit dizzy.

Halfahunnerstillastunner · 25/08/2018 22:15

Agree good pre-sleep routine is vital. I find it hard to sleep when my brain is thinking about too many things and worrying about forgetting those "oh I need to
Do x y z tomorrow" thoughts that appear as I finally settle down so I keep a notebook by my bed to jot things down as they pop into my head. Then I can let them go!
Can also recommend Tropic So Sleepy Pillow Mist. I'm not a fan of lavender as it's often so strong but this one is a nice blend of different oils as well as lavender and does seem to help. It lasts as well - if I wake up in the early hours I can still smell it on my pillow.
