Mouse in the bin

Davros · 25/08/2018 01:32

DD just called me to her room because there was rustling in her bin. I poked it with my toe and a very little grey mouse ran out. She's just seen it again. We're not sure what to do. She's going to sleep in another room but how do we get rid of it without hurting it?

Get cage type mousetraps

FissionChips · 25/08/2018 01:36

Just kill it, it’s vermin.

starfishmummy · 25/08/2018 01:37

Kill it.

Well...you could get a mouse-friendly trap then release it 6 miles away but you would probably be better off buying an electric box: fast, cleaner and can be placed discreetly in the corner (sorry, I tried the humane way - that only works so far) Sad

friendly

effective

Not much we can do tonight. I'll see what I can find tomorrow to catch it or kill it if necessary. I wonder if there are more of them. I would fetch the cat but she's never caught anything bigger than a moth and is likely to run a mile

Make sure enough wash everywhere it could’ve been, they piss almost constantly.

bakebakebake · 25/08/2018 01:53

Catch it then put it outside?

My cat brings them in and I end up catching them in tubs or whatever I have to hand!

Davros · 25/08/2018 01:54

I'd forgotten about their constant pissing ugh. That electronic trap looks good but with Amazon Prime being like it is now I'm not sure I can wait. I'll see if I can find one in an actual shop

Mousetrap, before it has babies.

MozzieMagnet · 25/08/2018 02:05

Make sure you get Victor and go expensive: you will need C batteries with it. We have used jellybeans and also salami/cocktail sausage as bait - easier to clean than peanut butter.
You really do need to act now rather than later, they will breed and chew wiring. Sorry.
While you are at B+Q get expanding foam for any holes.
Allow cat in the room once you have caught it/put trap away. Its scent might deter others.
Alternatively keep trap in corner re-baited to see if you have multiple.
Don't bother with noise repellents/peppermint oil etc but black pepper/air freshener around holes not terrible idea...block with steelwire or the expanding foam once you think you are clear (worse than the mouse is a mouse in the wall scraping).
The victor trap is good as quick and no poison.
Good luck.

MozzieMagnet · 25/08/2018 02:08

Oh and remove the bin obviously (source of food) and no more food in bedrooms, sorry.

DownAndUnder · 25/08/2018 02:16

A human trap means you have to realise them at least a mile away, and they’ll probably be killed anyway. Get snap traps, they are probably the lesser of the evils.

Rebecca36 · 25/08/2018 03:37

I had a lone mouse once and trapped it in a humane mouse trap. Then I took it down to the end of the garden and it went under the shed, reunited with spouse and family no doubt. Sweet little thing, cheeky too.
My cats liked it for a different reason altogether but I saved it from them.

Davros · 25/08/2018 15:24

I've put down two humane traps. I didn't see any droppings or chewed wires so far. DD and her mates will have to bag and remove their rubbish every visit. Heh heh, it would be worth pretending there's a mouse to get them to tidy up. I'll have to escalate to death traps if nothing happens
