Not a drop of alcohol

Apparently, according to the latest research published in the Lancet, drinking no alcohol whatsoever is best for you. A little of what you fancy is worse than none.

Bad news for light social drinkers who might have thought our occasional glass of wine was a good thing. 😢

^ They found that out of 100,000 non-drinkers, 914 would develop an alcohol-related health problem such as cancer or suffer an injury.
But an extra four people would be affected if they drank one alcoholic drink a day.^

Half of one percent greater risk than not drinking at all. Nope, can't get worked up about that.

^Prof David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor for the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge, sounded a note of caution about the findings...
"there is no safe level of living, but nobody would recommend abstention."^

Yup

The WHO has been saying this for a very long time, and anytime a thread like this comes up, I post this:
www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/disease-prevention/alcohol-use/data-and-statistics/q-and-a-how-can-i-drink-alcohol-safely
"This might not be the answer people want to hear, but there is no safe level for drinking alcohol. Of course there is lower-risk drinking, but WHO does not set particular limits, because the evidence shows that the ideal situation for health is to not drink at all."

Apologies - I thought this was new.

Well since alcohol is basically a toxin the body tries to get rid of as fast as possible it makes sense. Just like there is no safe amount of cigarettes, cocaine etc.

Funny how moderate drinkers have the best outcome then.

TheDowagerCuntess · 25/08/2018 03:26

Look, I say this as someone (touch wood) blissfully unaffected by any health worries...

But there's more to life than staying indoors and avoiding all risk.

I'm sure teetotallers have the best health outcomes. Good for them. They deserve it. But I'd rather live life my way, have the craic with friends as often as able, and continue with my moderate alcohol intake, even if it means less than optimum health outcomes.

There's more to life, and you're a long time dead. I'd rather remember the good times on my death bed, than all the abstaining, but that's me.

It doesn’t take a bloody genius to realise that putting poison into your body isn’t good for it Hmm

Which is another reason why I hate these drinking in pregnancy threads. It’s just unnecessary.
