Paying for my items at the self service till. Man next to me buying lots of alcohol, I saw him bag it and it flashed up on the screen that he’d used his contactless too soon.

I saw him look, hesitate and then walk off.

I told the person behind the till but he’d quickly left by then.

I should have challenged him really ... kicking myself that I didn’t.

Not your circus, not your monkeys. Don’t give it another thought.

Kartrashian · 24/08/2018 17:54

I guess .... but it’s people that do things like steal £40 worth of alcohol that drives up the price for everyone else.

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/08/2018 17:58

He must have had to have a staff member ok his purchase if it was alcohol anyway, why didn’t they notice?

Beansonapost · 24/08/2018 17:59

Is it really theft that drives up the price of alcohol?

Kartrashian · 24/08/2018 18:07

I’m not saying specifically the price of alcohol.

I’m saying theft as a whole from shops drives the price up for the honest people to cover the losses.

I thought alcohol needed to be authorized by staff before it was paid for

Iknowwhoyouare123 · 24/08/2018 18:11

Isn't contactless only for under £20?

Kartrashian · 24/08/2018 18:11

Well I don’t bloody know, maybe they authorised the first one he put through. That’s hardly the point of the thread.

He knew he hadn’t paid, and he walked out the shop regardless.

Bloody hell I read a 10 page thread the other day about people telling the op to give an empty abandoned primary bag into the police station Confused

OP posts:
Kartrashian · 24/08/2018 18:13

Oh ffs. I give up. What’s the point of the completely POINTLESS questions that have nothing to do with the OP.

His contactless didn’t work because he used his card too soon. So that’s why it wasn’t rejected as being over the limited. FFS.

I’m off.

Well done for this post, thankfully there are some people with moral fibre left. You could have challenged but chances are he would have been offensive Sad

What a shame people think theft is ok even from a major supermarket! Ultimately we pay for shoplifters & we are naive to think otherwise Angry

mummabearfourbabybears · 24/08/2018 18:16

You did what you could have done. We could all do more in hindsight but you don't know how he would react. Become aggressive etc. Well done for alerting the staff though.

ScreamingValenta · 24/08/2018 18:16

I think you did the right thing by reporting him. Had you challenged him personally, you'd risk him accosting you outside the store on a future occasion.

YeTalkShiteHen · 24/08/2018 18:16

Oh good, another stroppy OP that is pissed off when people on a public forum they’ve posed a question on reply.

Nowt as queer as folk Grin

NaomiNagata · 24/08/2018 18:17

The staff would authorise that he was of legal age and then they'd walk away. They don't stand and watch you pay; they just authorise it and leave. Then he'd have to go through the "finish transaction" stuff. That's when he did contsctless too quickly and then he left.

ColaCubez · 24/08/2018 18:18

You did the right thing and informed staff. They may have him on cctv and can inform the police.

You did enough imo. He may have become aggressive if challenged by a stranger. A bottle of booze isn't worth that.

Nesssie · 24/08/2018 18:19

Just to be clear on where my moral compass is
abandoned unused handbag- yes
Stealing from a shop- no

You did all you could by reporting, some would have not even have done that. If the shop wants they could review cctv and involve the police.

happinessischocolate · 24/08/2018 18:24

The shop will have cctv so can pursue it with the police if they wish.

The local police posted a picture on fb of a guy who had taken the change left by the previous customer on a self service till in a super market so keep your eye on the local police fb page, it may come up yet.

specialsubject · 24/08/2018 18:25

you did all you could, challenging a slimeball like this could have put you at risk. many on mn approve of theft as long as they arent the victim so it isnt the best forum for this.

hopefully he will get what he deserves before too long.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 24/08/2018 18:31

Oh no, no, no, I wouldn't ever challenge anyone in a supermarket for shoplifting/not paying. People who'll do that will probably also happily chuck a punch or two when they're being confronted. You informed the shop, they can deal with it.
