Anyone else get this pain when flying?

I'm not a nervous flyer and I have no heart or circulation issues.

We went on holiday and I had pain on my right side (like someone stabbing me with a skewer) in my back , round about bra level. It was worse on the flight out , better on the way back.

Like a stitch , but it was agony even to move in my seat. I walked a bit , stretched .
It vanished the minute I got off the plane.

I had it last time I flew (couple of years ago) but I thought it was muscle cramp from sleeping awkwardly.

It was a 4 hour flight .

I'm now worried about flying again TBH.

Even walking and stretching didn't ease it so I don't know if booking extra leg room would help.

Any thoughts?

trapped wind?

BigStripeyBastard · 24/08/2018 16:13

It is trapped wind. Gets trapped under your diaphragm.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 24/08/2018 16:16

Trapped wind.........ok that sounds feasible (but it is so painful)

So , would taking something before flying help?

It actually felt (the first time it occured) like gallbladder pain , but unless I've grown a new gallbladder or I was born with 2 of them, not due to that Grin

Smallhorse · 24/08/2018 16:27

Where is it trapped ? Where does it come from ?

RavenLG · 24/08/2018 16:29

I always get a weird shooting pain up my neck.

As others have said trapped wind. And it can be bloody painful, I was doubled over literally crying in agony the last time I had it. It's horrid.

Following for any tips on getting rid of/preventing it!
Get almost every flight :-(

beeefcake · 24/08/2018 16:34

Another one for trapped wind. Take some buscopan or windeze with you next time you fly. Also ask your dr for some diazepam for the nerves

I'm bumping this up again (I'm the OP) because we're into holiday season now and I'm thinking of booking a holiday (not for a while yet but it'll be 4 hours )

It'll be worth having extra leg room I reckon to stretch .
I'll look into any preventatives .

Feel free to pile on with any tips Grin

The wind is trapped because of your seating position. Usually you eat and drink on a flight and the gut area isn’t stretching because you are not moving around. What made a difference for me was watching what I ate or drank ( in the run up to the flight too) so only light meals, nothing fizzy, no fruit. Very comfy clothing ( I wear exercise pants) and a little walk along the plane.

MrsGrindah · 20/07/2019 13:01

I don’t think stretching your legs is the issue, you need to “ untrap ” your stomach and bowel area, so you need to get standing and walking. But honestly watching what I eat and having loose clothing helps. Don’t forget you retain water too on a flight so if your clothes are a bit tight to begin with they can really restrict you. Also have Windeeze tablets on hand

Lawnerd · 20/07/2019 18:11

Cabin pressure won’t help either. Loose clothing, no fizzy drinks, stretch when you can.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 20/07/2019 18:14

Another one who suffers here too!

PancakeAndKeith · 20/07/2019 18:17

My wind isn’t trapped when I fly. Blush

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 20/07/2019 18:19

My wind isn’t trapped when I fly.
Neither is mine! I feel very sorry for the other people trapped in the plane with it though Blush

OP, Deflatine is great for getting you parping.

PolkadotLollipop · 20/07/2019 18:23

Jesus. My teenaged DD farts like an ancient Labrador on flights. Horrendous

GrandmaSharksDentures · 20/07/2019 18:52

Peppermint tea can be very helpful for this sort of thing
