Day op - keep me company

In hospital for a day op (although I suspect I'll end being kept in), been up since the back of 5, nothing to eat since dinner yesterday, no water since 6am and been told my op isn't scheduled until around 2pm 😭

So I'm sitting in an uncomfortable waiting room and will be here for hours, don't even have a footstool. Everyone else seems to have someone with them even though it's meant to be a patient waiting room only.

DH isn't in the country and my mum is looking after DS. Feel a bit tearful, think I'm nervous even though it will be my 8th GA.

Morning OP! Hopefully your op will go well. I sympathise. Hospital is never fun. Keep strong and MN.

Thanks! I may ask for a footstool as my ankle will swell up dramatically if I sit with it down for too long.
I had a GTT when pregnant and they had big comfy chairs to sit in with footstools in a nice quiet room with screens for privacy so I was kind of expecting something like that.
This is just a bog standard waiting room with uncomfortable chairs.

Oh, good morning, dear @kaytee87 I hope the wait goes well for you.

What do you usually like to do, to pass the time? Can you read, do you have headphones for music or the spoken word? Is there WiFi?

I have some waiting to do today, too, we will have a great time together 😀

kaytee87 · 24/08/2018 07:35

Hello @FinallyHere I have my kindle with books and programmes to watch so hopefully that will pass some time.
I'd love a cup of tea but not allowed.
What are you doing today?

Will they not move you to a bed soon? My experience has been that you get booked in and then moved to a ward with a bed, to be honest I haven’t had too many day surgeries but assumed it was the same process.

Why do you feel they will keep you in?
At least u have your kindle now and I would definitely ask for something for your foot!

No, apparently we wait here then ward after op.
It always takes me a long time to come round from a GA, last 2 times my oxygen was low and was in recovery for hours. I'm assuming once docs have done their rounds that will be it til next day. I'm not sure as the last time I had day surgery I was a child, I've always been kept in.

Rules of civility by Amor Towles. Gentleman of Moscow is our current, bookclub choice, so that's next, but I decided to read their books in the order written. I love to have lots to read over the summer.

What about you @kaytee87

Check with nurses about fluid, to go that long without could cause veins to shrink making it difficult to cannulate later.
I've had 5 surgeries in 2 years and the latest was at 5pm...stopped fluids at 6am as instructed but by the time they got to me it was impossible to cannulate, I discussed with anaesthetist and we agreed a cup of sweet tea (🤢) would help. The next surgery I got in early and explained and was allowed to drink!
Try and nest on a couple of chairs and you may doze off, otherwise buy Monument Valley game and play that...will definitely pass the time!!
Good luck, hope all goes well Thanks
