DS forgot his homework. Should I take it in?

He's 8. I told him to pack his school bag this morning, "Have you packed your homework folder, your water bottle, snack?"

He packed his homework folder, but not his homework which I waved at him. He has ASD so technically he did as he was told. I should have specified homework as well as homework folder.

I assume needs it for his lesson after break. I could potentially slip into school at break time, don't want to disturb the class! They have PE second lesson, but I don't know if the classroom is locked during PE/break time.

Just drop it into school reception?

onwardsandupwardsagain · 24/08/2018 07:18

Yes, I would take it in, it will only cause him stress if he has not got it

ThanksHunkyJesus · 24/08/2018 07:18

Absolutely not.

There is no reception. Small school.

He's 8. Take it in to the school reception.

GummyGoddess · 24/08/2018 07:19

The school can't have such lax security that you could just walk in surely?

I wouldn't take it in, if he's in mainstream school then he is perfectly capable of learning to remember it. I say that as someone with AS, not taking it in is helping him in the long run.

NerrSnerr · 24/08/2018 07:21

You wouldn't be able to take it into the classroom would you? There must be some kind of reception system? Where workmen/ deliveries go?

notacooldad · 24/08/2018 07:21

If he usually remembers I would ( and have )
If he habitually forgets I wouldn't.

Isitme13 · 24/08/2018 07:21

Yes, I would take it in.

It’s not as though he was ignoring your attempts to get him to pack his bag - he tried, and did his best.

A learning curve for both of you - he needs to start trying to extend his thinking re: packing, and remember associated items, and you need to remember to be more explicit in your prompts.

Been there, done that (I have 3 with ASD, and my middle one has done the exact same thing before now. I only don’t take it in if I have explicitly reminded and it’s still not been done - usually because of the rush for iPad once packing is finished!)

TrappedByATurtle · 24/08/2018 07:22

The school can't have such lax security that you could just walk in surely? Er yes, it's a school, not a prison!

Yes, I imagine he will be stressed if he doesn't have it. I am home today, wouldn't be possible every day. First time he's had homework this term.

AJPTaylor · 24/08/2018 07:22

Do you oick him up at the end of the day? I would take it in then and hand it to the teacher.
The teacher knows it was done and will have it to mark
DS will know there is a consequence for forgetting it.

JacquesHammer · 24/08/2018 07:24

Yes I absolutely would take it in.

He did exactly as you’d asked him.

SleepyMcEdie · 24/08/2018 07:25

Er yes, it's a school, not a prison!- it’s safeguarding children! No-one should be able to walk into a school and have access to children.

TrappedByATurtle · 24/08/2018 07:25

But he will need it for the lesson I assume. The homework was to read through a story he had written in class so I'm presuming they will each have to read it out loud.

Yes, this It’s not as though he was ignoring your attempts to get him to pack his bag For once he did exactly as he was told!

ballseditupagain · 24/08/2018 07:25

I would and have taken it in. Can't believe those that are saying they wouldn't. He's 8. My children lose golden time if they are late handing in homework. It's not like he hasn't done it.

PristineCondition · 24/08/2018 07:25

Yes. He’s 8

TrappedByATurtle · 24/08/2018 07:26

Ok, should I aim for beginning of break, end of break or slightly before break time?

OP posts:
Sirzy · 24/08/2018 07:27

Yes he is 8. He followed your instruction and took his folder.

Flamingoose · 24/08/2018 07:27

Yeah I would.

GummyGoddess · 24/08/2018 07:28

I'm in my 30's, none of my schools had situations where you could just walk in. Particularly after the school shooting which happened when I was in middle school extra locks and fences were put up. It's to keep them safe, not imprison them, plus we had a few bolters and this meant that they couldn't run off into trouble.

JacquesHammer · 24/08/2018 07:30

Ok, should I aim for beginning of break, end of break or slightly before break time?

Isn’t there a receptionist or secretary? Go at any time and give to them.

AChickenCalledKorma · 24/08/2018 07:31

I would - and have done - if it's relatively easy to do so. But would also have a talk with him about how that won't always be possible and he can't count on me to bail him out.

Smidge001 · 24/08/2018 07:31

Why don't you just take it in now instead of waiting til break? Then hell have it before class starts?

TrappedByATurtle · 24/08/2018 07:36

He's already in class.
There are no fences save that separating the playing field from the neighbouring houses.
As I said, there is no receptionist or secretary (well there is a secretary, but she only works when the Headmaster works which is Monday and Wednesday mornings. So that's no help today)

OP posts:
llangennith · 24/08/2018 07:39

Take it in ASAP and stop overthinking.
