What time does your Year 7 go to bed?

Just that really. DD is about to start Year 7. Any semblance of a routine has gone out of the window during the holidays!

DD is a night owl and struggles to go to sleep too early but obviously I need to make sure she's getting enough sleep. I know she'll tell me that everyone else is allowed to stay up until some ridiculous hour so I thought I'd get a feel for what's usual.

9-10pm, although they tend to choose to go up to bed around 9ish as they are tired. They like their bed like their Mum. No technology upstairs!

twoheaped · 24/08/2018 07:01

9pm, lights off 9:30pm.
Would like it to be earlier at 6am start.

MrsJonesAndMe · 24/08/2018 07:08

Aim for sleep between 9pm and 6:30 so lights out at 8:30.

My rules are: technology/screens off from 7pmish, pottering about for an hour or so after that (music practice, shower, etc). In room from 8.15, in bed by 9, lights out by 9.30.

But she does take a loooong time to wind down, and settle, which is why so much pottering time - there’s lots of time for her to decompress, sort stuff out, talk things through (she has ASD).

She definitely needs the sleep as she’s generally exhausted from dealing with the day/social stuff, but Gerri ginger to settle is the problem.

Same here, around 9ish. Not a great sleeper so we aim for bed around 8.30 but she can read until 9.30. If it's after 9.15 no reading time so this encourages her to get upstairs before Grin

Chasingsquirrels · 24/08/2018 07:19

Ds2 has just finished yr7. Generally he'll be in bed by 10pm but I doubt he goes to sleep before 11pm.

ChilliMum · 24/08/2018 07:20

Oh and we have a strict no electronics or screen time after dinner.

2anddone · 24/08/2018 07:24

We are similar to pp no electronics except tv after 6pm.
Then upstairs about 8pm lights out 8.30....falls asleep around 8.45 up at 7am.
He is shattered without his sleep and was in bed at 6.45 until starting high school last year.

Upsy1981 · 24/08/2018 07:30

Wow! Those times are earlier than I thought. Thank you, that gives some help. There's no way she'd be asleep by 9:30pm but maybe bed by 9, reading until 10 might be realistic. She takes after her dad and her natural sleep pattern is about midnight until 8:30/9 am (or later) and she falls back to that in the holidays. She loves her sleep but finds getting to sleep difficult. Unlike me, who is counting down the minutes to bedtime from about 8pm!! I think I need to start bringing bedtime forward a little in preparation for school. Hoping she will be so exhausted by all the new stuff she has to remember that she will crash out earlier!

Year 7 is exhausting. Longer days, more travel usually, more homework, social upheaval all take their toll. Mine are bigger now but both of them went back to 8.30 from 9 o’clock for a while.

cloudtree · 24/08/2018 07:35

Lights out at 9pm. For context though mine have to be up by 6.30 and leave the house by 7.30

Our routine (on a non activity night) is broadly

5pm school bus gets back
5.30 food because they're generally ravenous
6.30-8/8.30 homework
8.00-8.30 getting ready for the next day, wash/bath, bed to read.

Not much downtime in the evenings during term time here.

Upsy1981 · 24/08/2018 07:38

Thanks cloudtree those timings are useful.

We to have got into bad habits over the summer, especially on holiday when bedtime was 11pm and noone got up until 9am!! We've had all the speil about everyone else in their class getting to stay up late (and actually judging by the time they are all WhatsApp-ing that may well be right). However I know my kids need sleep so we aim for bedtime routine starting at 8.30pm, in bed by 9 latest, lights out between 9.15 to 9.30. Up at 7am.

QueenofLouisiana · 24/08/2018 08:18

I’d agree that yr7 is utterly exhausting. I once came home to find DS fast asleep on the living room floor, still in his uniform. It gets easier in yr8.

DS was usually in the shower at 9pm, then reading/ radio/ audiobook until 9.30-9.45. No phones, tablets or TV in his room. I’m thinking this year will be upstairs About 9.45, lights out at 10.15. He’s slept for about 11 hours a day this holiday, so he can’t complain that he doesn’t need to be in bed.

TowerRingInferno · 24/08/2018 08:35

Ds has just finished y7, and is going to bed at 10/10:30 during the holidays.
During the school year his official bedtime was 9 but he was often so tired that he went to bed earlier. Y7 was a big shock to the system .

Upsy1981 · 24/08/2018 09:35

Oh gosh! I'm going to have a grumpy 11 yo on my hands if its as tiring as you say! She doesn't do tired very well (or hungry, or thirsty! She's a very finely balanced machine!) Wish me luck...

OP same here, my DS is just going into year 6 and if he had his way would easily be up until 11.30 / midnight! He has to go to bed earlier most nights as we are so tired and go to bed before him but I'm sure some nights he has sneaked iPad into his bedroom and been up at 1am when I've got up to another DC!

I was the same when I was that age to be honest, I just don't think he needs the sleep but I will be making him go to bed earlier when he is in Y6!
