Very odd. Can't work it out at all.

MsJaneAusten · 23/08/2018 22:47

Gosh. That sounds awfully mysterious. Carbon monoxide?

Poor couple Flowers

Nicknacky · 23/08/2018 22:49

It seems very strange. And obviously tragic for the couple involved.

Bluntness100 · 23/08/2018 22:49

Yes i was curious about that too, could be something wrong with sanitation or something . It seems to be safety related but more in line with health /illness.

babycakes1010 · 23/08/2018 22:50

Must be at least a suspicion of something dangerous/unsafe as I'm sure heart attacks happen fairly frequently holiday or not with no outside cause.

MsJaneAusten · 23/08/2018 22:50

For those who don’t want to click on a Fail link, it says that he had a heart attack and she died ‘of grief’

PurpleCrowbar · 23/08/2018 22:52

Eeek.

I live in Egypt & have stayed there a couple of times. Nice hotel, clean & well run. Very popular with my colleagues with small dc.

RoseAndRose · 23/08/2018 22:53

From the BBC version

"The company said the circumstances of their deaths were unclear and it had received "further reports of a raised level of illness among guests"."

Crunchymum · 23/08/2018 22:53

Don't mumsnetters know everything Grin

Seriously though it's just a story that stood out to me. I am curious as it's quite unusual to move all the occupants (I believe they are being offered alternative accommodation or tickets home)

OP posts:
Bluntness100 · 23/08/2018 22:55

A few newspapers are confirming he died of a heart attack and she had low blood pressure which effectively sent her into cardiac arrest when her husband died.

The evacuation is being put down to a raised level of illness, I don't know if it's linked to his heart attack.

It's very odd.

Crunchymum · 23/08/2018 22:56

That DM article is Shock

So his wife died from grief? Yet Thomas Cook are evacuating the whole hotel? And publicising it? Blush

TomHardysNextWife · 23/08/2018 23:03

With 2 deaths from unconfirmed reasons, I'd say they are playing safe. It must have been hard to move all of the guests so must have been quite a strong concern, I'd imagine.

Very sad for the family of the two people who died whatever the cause.

Severe food poisoning bug or CO2 issues maybe. Hopefully nothing too sinister but it does all seem very suspect.

argumentativefeminist · 23/08/2018 23:12

If they've investigated and found slightly higher than usual levels of common holiday illnesses, and then this incident has happened, could they be moving everyone else just to prevent speculation/mass psychosomatic illness? Where large groups of people think they're ill just because they've heard about all this?

NotTakenUsername · 23/08/2018 23:18

Isn’t speculation a strong contributor to chit chat? Op posted in chat for goodness sake.

Crunchymum · 23/08/2018 23:18

Seems like a very expensive preventative measure? And to go public as well?

The lady was a member of staff . It’s all very sad .

It would appear that there are conflicting accounts about the two deaths so Thomas Cook are being very careful which is a good thing I think . You probably would not believe the cases of very severe illnesses that get brushed under the carpet on holidays , so better to be on the safe side until they get all the facts .

AuntieStella · 24/08/2018 08:08

It's the 'top of the hour' story on BBC Breakfast.

Presumably there's a statement because it's hard to keep the movement of 300 people quiet.

Deaths are still unexplained, but reporter (who had been itw tThomas Cook) appeared omconfirm first death heart attack, secind death unexplained. And saying it's not CO or aircon issues (I has been wondering about Legionnaires) but did repeat that there is a higher than expected level of illness.

People booked for next 4 weeks will be offered other holidays.

WatermelonGold · 24/08/2018 08:11

The couple’s daughter who was on holiday with them (it was a ‘holiday of a lifetime’ for the couple who died) is blaming a faulty air con unit.

StealthPolarBear · 24/08/2018 08:14

I spotted this, really odd

BarbaraofSevillle · 24/08/2018 12:39

Sad news and they look like they were quite healthy otherwise - not frail, so you wouldn't think food poisoning would kill both of them.

I suppose there could have been a legionella or faulty air conditioning/CO problem, but time will tell. If it's the latter, that's something they will be extra cautious about because they were found at fault when 2 children died of carbon monoxide poisoning in another property they used a few years ago.
