Would you get a cat in these circumstances?

Small first floor maisonette. Really very, very small
1 adult (out 8-4 ish weekdays), one 12 yo
Cat flap not possible
?

Ds has never had a pet, never made a fuss about it either but he’s the type of kid who will stop and talk to every cat or dog he passes, gravitates to any pets when visiting others etc.

I had dogs and cats growing up and they were often the things that made me happiest. I think the love you can feel for (and from) a pet can be wonderful. I’d love for him to have that.

But realistically we wouldn’t be suitable I don’t think. Or would we?

You might be best to get this moved to the ‘litter tray’ topic, lots of cat experts there.

Could you rehome an indoor cat from a shelter (some are already like that for various reasons). I’d say to make a kitten one in that environment would be less than ideal. Having a cat through teenage years is lovely though.

Rescue centres often have cats that need to be indoor-only, for health reasons - generally older cats. That could work for you. Being out 8-4 shouldn't be an issue - as you probably know from your childhood cats, they will happily snooze the day away and then come for their attention when you get home. If you have love to give and can afford all a cat's needs, such as vet bills, food, cattery/cat-sitter for holidays, I am sure you would be great cat- servants owners!

x-post with chips and really good advice from chips to move to the Litter Tray.

Friends of ours adopted blind kittens, and I know a few people with cats with FIV. I say go for it - but then I’m of the opinion that a house isn’t a home without a cat Grin
