DS Fell out of his cot!

I was putting washing out in the garden while DS was napping in his cot. I noticed he had woken up on the monitor but carried on putting it out as he was just sitting and playing with his bunny. Just as I was walking back into the living room and then upstairs to go and get him there was a massive bang on the floor and as I looked up (his room is at the top of the stairs) he was lying on the floor looking at me but not moving! Have checked him over and he's walking/moving normally and has had lunch and is talking/jabbering ok but should I get him checked out at urgent care just in case? I'm sitting here shaking like a leaf!!

How old is he and did he fall onto carpet?

If he's eating / chatting / playing normally etc then I doubt you have any reason to worry. Maybe strip him down and feel him all over for any tender areas or bruises just to put your mind at rest.

Ps I found my toddler on top of his chest of drawers recently Shock

It’s so scary when this happens! No tears or anything? If he’s eating and being his normal self then I’d assume he’s alright but no one would blame you for getting him checked over to be sure. Can the cot be lowered? I made this mistake with my DD and she managed to get one leg over.

Time to put him in a bed then!

I remember when my sister did that! No harm befell her, and mum stopped putting the side of the cot up, reasoning that as she could climb out she might as well do so from a lower height. Just keep an eye on DS, he sounds fine. If you’re concerned then maybe give NHS 111 a call.

He's just turned one. He fell onto carpet which is fairly thick and cushioned it a bit I think. DH has been tasked to put his cot on the lowest setting (he's definitely not ready for a bed yet) when he gets home from work tonight and also to put the top stair gate in place. He's dropped things out of his cot before now but just stood staring at them - never seemed bothered about getting them back himself!

My DD did this when she was about 7 months old (in the middle of the night). It was her first night not in a gro-bag - she'd been sleeping badly and I thought maybe the sleeping bag was making her feel trapped.

I was woken up by a huge bang as she landed on the wooden floor. Bit of a bruise where she hit her eyebrow on the baby monitor on the way down, but no lasting damage.

Back in a gro-bag after that until she was out of her cot (at about 1yo).

RockyisMYRhino · 23/08/2018 12:35

There were no tears at all from him he was just lying there staring at me a bit shocked I think

Could you try a sleeping bag?

My 2yo is still in his cot and I put it down to bring in a sleeping bag.

You can get lightweight ones if your house is warm.

dinosaurkisses · 23/08/2018 12:40

What age is he? The instructions that came with our cot bed stated that it should be on the lowest setting from six months or when the baby can sit unaided.

RockyisMYRhino · 23/08/2018 12:41

He's just turned one. DH is going to lower the cot before bed time tonight

He has a sleeping bag at night time but not during daytime naps. He doesn't always nap at the same time of the day so it's difficult to try and get him in it when he's asleep already

I went in to get dd up one morning and couldn’t find her. I was absolutely panic stricken- checking windows and shouting for dh, when I noticed a little pair of feet sticking out from under the cot.
She had obviously climbed out in the right and gone exploring.

gamerchick · 23/08/2018 12:51

Time to take the side off. Once they start climbing out there's no stopping them or maybe time for a bed.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/08/2018 12:51

DS managed to climb out of his cot in a sleeping bag and it was on the lowest setting. Can't remember how old he was, but certainly younger than we had planned to convert his cot into a bed. Don't know how he did it. Just remember DH was away and I was putting the rubbish out when I heard a huge bang. Rushed upstairs to find DS standing by his cot in his sleeping bag looking somewhat confused Shock

We converted his cot to a bed the next day.

RockyisMYRhino · 23/08/2018 12:58

I don't think he climbed out of the cot - more leaned over the rail to see where bunny had gone and overbalanced. Definitely putting his cot on lowest setting tonight once DH is home and going straight up to get him when he's awake now. No more playing with bunny/effelump in bed now!!!

Not very helpful now but you are supposed to put the cot on the lowest setting as soon as they can sit up.

RockyisMYRhino · 23/08/2018 13:09

I didn't know that thanks @hiplink DS is my first so am finding it everything as we go along!
