I rinse mine out but have recently started soaking them in a bit of bleach as they seem to go frowsty quickly. My MIL says bleach is a no no and will kill us all. Wdyd?

Bicarb and boiling water, watch it fizz, let it stand then clean as normal

Does this also work for cleaning the lid? I have tea (with milk) & I really struggle to keep the lid clean & fresh

cloudtree · 23/08/2018 08:05

Hot soapy water as soon as I get in, then every few weeks I soak them in milton. I drink black coffee so they get less smelly.

I also bought cups and a thermos that can be taken apart easily to allow cleaning.I also have a bottle brush for the inside.

Dishwasher for reusable drinking water bottles. Thermos flask first rinse then add a pea size bit of washing up liquid then hot tap water then i wrap a dinner knife in kitchen roll and put it in flask wiping round the sides then rinse well. Then leave overnight soaking in cold water. I always fill will boiling water before i use it also.

Milton sterilizing tablet seems to work.

HardAsSnails · 23/08/2018 08:12

Hot soapy water and then a soak in Milton.

PristineCondition · 23/08/2018 08:13

Oxi stain removing powder. I use the astonish brand because its a pound a tub. Activate it with boiling water and soak. Gets rid of all stains and smells! But also, bleach is not evil. It's the same active ingredient that's in Milton, just household bleach is more concentrated (mostly with other additives). It breaks down very quickly and isn't the environmental monster it's painted to be.

BackToBeingMe · 23/08/2018 08:16

Dishwasher for both, our Thermos mugs are top rack dishwasher safe, worth the slightly higher price tag as the drink defiantly tastes better.

Twistella · 23/08/2018 08:24

Is Milton just bleach?

I used to buy a very expensive wound care spray for horses then discovered that the active ingredient was just bleach!

I do use the dishwasher but we try to only use it once a day so there's often garlicky tomaotey things in there which seems to taint the bottles

Hot soapy water and scrub after every use.

Every so often, soak in Milton Boots own brand, it's cheaper and rinse in scaldingly hot water.

Twistella · 23/08/2018 08:57

I'm such a slut. Ours get left in the car or sports bags for days Blush

Milton is just bleach, I think, but I use Milton precisely because it sterilises. Good wash in hot soapy water and then a soak in Milton for the ones that can’t go in the dishwasher.

emwithme · 23/08/2018 10:20

@Twistella so do ours! DH works 12 hour shifts, 4 on 4 off, so we have 6 travel mugs that only actually get washed when he's off shift!

Twistella · 23/08/2018 11:08

Off to buy some Milton to tackle the mouldy pile of plastic!!
