Advice on dealing with bullying

DS is 11, kind, bright, funny, not physical, loves computers and games and reading, hates sport. He's always been fairly popular.

A group of kids have basically gone feral in school and we had problems with them last term, DS was terrified of them and they targeted him physically a few times.

Day two of the new term and he's come home with an eye which I think will be black by morning. One of the group collided with him, and subsequently pushed him to the ground, where another held DS down so he could punch him in the face.

My blood is boiling. DS tried so hard to be brave and shrug it off but then the tears came. The school were utterly useless last time, politician's answers and no interest in my child, just flannel about helping those who interacted differently to learn new ways of interacting. I wouldn't mind so much if the school had ever had a complaint about DS's behaviour but they never have.

To add to it all one of his new teachers (job share, it's a headless school at the moment and the acting head is apparently incapable so one of his teachers is having to act up as well twice a week) seems to be completely gruff and horrible and moved him three times today without explanation, and twice admonished him for being in a different seat. DS is completely bemused and I think that's a sideshow but it's adding to him being pretty miserable about going back tomorrow, much as he's trying to hide it.

This is mostly a vent, DH is going to talk to the school tomorrow (since they haven't bothered to contact us about the black eye incident) and doubtless will handle it with the diplomacy and tact of a raging bull elephant, but any pointers would be helpful. I just want to take him away from this crap, he really doesn't deserve it.
