Worried about childcare arrangement

I'm due back at work soon. I got offered a new job, I contacted quite a few childminders to check availability, wasted a lot of people's time, and then I wasn't confirmed properly (NHS, you guessed it), until 4.5 weeks on from the original "we'd like to offer you the role"

The childminder I wanted to go with was great and just wanted confirmation of which days I would be working, of which I didn't get given until the late afternoon. She said her availability isn't as open anymore since she has taken on another child recently. I am part time.

I need her because she is happy to do pick ups and drop offs Sad I live quite remotely with limited bus services.

The bus I'll be getting to take me to work is a 10 minute walk to the bus stop, then a 15 minute bus ride. It's a 4 minute car journey.

What am I going to do? All the other childminders seem too far to get to via foot and there aren't any buses going in the direction of the other ones I've spoken to.

It's also such a faff because it might mean walking 45 minutes each way to drop DC off, and then getting a bus from the bus stop. This won't be doable since I can't walk that much a lot of the time due to a medical condition.

I'm pulling my hair out wondering. Is there something I haven't thought of? Please say yes Grin

Some suggestions:

  • ask childminder what days she CAN do and let your employer know that unfortunately these are the only days you are now available. You could offer to be more flexible if childminders availability changes or she can apply for a variation in future.
  • ask childminder for suggestions as she may know others locally or those looking for work
  • consider an au pair
  • a nanny share with another family may not be that much more expensive if you have two children
  • look at a nanny with their own child. Basically someone who comes to your house with their child and looks after yours and their child(ren)

Hope you get something sorted.
