Which deliciously Ella cook book should I get?

I’m vegetarian, looking for some new recipes that aren’t too ‘out there’ or spicy or long winded so that I can do them on a day to day basis for me and the dc. Interested in the sugar free one but I don’t bake enough (watching my weight!) to warrant getting that one. Any fit my bill?

I'm a veggie too and I found them all way too long winded and with far too many ingredients to use on a regular basis. I was hugely disappointed to be honest........... a case of style over substance. The sugar free is a con too as she just swaps cane sugar for medjool dates. I've used my River Cottage Veg far more as it's a bit more normal!

Oh no really? I was thinking it would be a great new cook book for me! Gutted. I want some to try fuss free without having to stock stuff that isn’t easily accessible!

I've always found bbc good foods great for family recipes especially veggie. Quick and easy!

I actually use their chilli recipe..... haven’t been on there for a while, thanks will have a look.

I've just bought Anna Jones' "A Modern Way to Cook". It's great - it's divided into quick, less quick and dinner party recipes, has lots of mix and match ideas for omelettes and nourish bowls, and is a really "useable" book, if you know what I mean? She also gives advice on how to adapt the recipes to make them vegan. It's my new favourite!

Seconding Anna Jones and River Cottage! I went through a Deliciously Ella phase a few years ago but found a lot of her recipes a bit mushy (you do a lot of blending/pureeing) and bland.

ApricotExpat · 23/08/2018 09:00

I love the Deliciously Ella books. Have them all and use them weekly.
There's a new one out today. I don't think you'll regret getting them.

Ilmb · 23/08/2018 09:06

I saw she has a new one out today... I might have to go down to smiths and have a look through these recommendations. I have so many cookbooks I don’t open anymore as they are full of either recipes that take hours or I have to adapt them a lot (vegetarian) or things the dc won’t eat. To be fair dc aren’t fussy but I want normal every day but healthy meals that won’t cost the earth to make.

sweetening with honey or maple.syrup instead of refined sugar is not 'sugar free' - clearly Ellla didnt listen at school.

try the free websites for greek or other Mediterranean food. plenty of easy veggie ideas there,or indeed on a gazillion other free websites. never buy cookbooks, or if you must, get them from a charity shop.

I like her ‘Everyday’ book and I’ve got her new one on the way, but they’re not my fave.
The Middle Eastern Vegetarian Cookbook is my favourite cook book ever, I just love it. But I do love middle eastern food.

dmango · 23/08/2018 09:21

I love this ....recipes are easy but so tasty

Pinterest is your friend, I do most of my recipe searching there.

runningkeenster · 23/08/2018 10:31

Prerequisite for the Delicious Ella books: a food processor. I had one of her books and all but one of the recipes required one.

It may well be that all MNers have one, but I don't. I either use a mixer or a hand blender. But they don't really work for her recipes.

Ilmb · 23/08/2018 10:33

Thanks for that running. I don’t like to use food processors etc no idea why, just want to be able to cut and cook!

Don't get deliciously Ella, get Anna Jones A modern way to cook. It is brilliant, she classes her recipes by the time it takes to make them, she has some excellent ideas about stir fries and bowls, and all the ingredients are accessible. Her new one, The modern cook's year, is a little more complicated though, so I wouldn't go for that so much.

mosessupposes · 23/08/2018 11:46

Just to clarify, don't get delicously Ella if you are vegetarian, as her recipes are very vegan orientated. They aren't vegan, but close. Which means there are lots of harder to source ingredients.
